Gasification of wood has long been recognized as the most efficient method of burning wood. The ESSEX central heating unit is a downdraft gasifier-combustor and works like this. A small fire at the bottom of the wood charge bakes the wood in oxygen deficient atmospher
e, producing a highly flammable gas. This gas is drawn down through the bed of coals, through the slot burner, mixed with oxygen and burned in a double pass refractory chamber. Complete combustion takes place at temperatures reaching 2000 ° F, before the gases are cooled by the boiler’s horizontal heat exchanger. As a result emissions are virtually smokeless, odorless and creosote free. Using the stack gas analysis method, combustion efficiencies of over 95% have been reached. Because of our gasification process, various types of wood can be used as fuel. The ESSEX was designed to closely approximate the characteristics of traditional oil or gas fired boilers. It is the only wood fired unit on the market that cycles off and on like the traditional oil burner. Wood is burned only when needed and the rest of the time the gasification-combustion process is dormant. This is achieved by our unique hearth design that holds the bed of coals above combustion temperature when the unit is in the off mode.
