National Electrical Code Requirements - Major changes:

Surge Protection is Required for Dwelling Units:
New and replaced service equipment supplying dwellings are now required to be protected by listed Type 1 or Type 2 Surge Protective Devices. These protect electrical devices and appliances that may not be protected by point-of-use SPDs. It is estimated that the average home has $15,000 worth of equipment that can be damaged by surges.

Type 1 SPD: permanently connected SPDs intended for installation between the secondary of the service transformer and the line side of the service disconnect overcurrent device.

Type 2 SPD: Permanently connected SPDs intended for installation on the load side of the service disconnect overcurrent device, including SPDs located at the brand panel.

NEW Ground Fault Circuit Requirements:
GFCI protection is now required in all 125-volt through 250-volt receptacles supplied by a single-phase branch circuits rated 150-volts or less to ground in eleven* locations of a dwelling. Dryer and range receptacles, common 250-volt receptacles in homes, require GFCI protection
*Locations listed in NEC section 210.8(A)(1) through (A)(11).

New GFCI requirements include protection in non-dwelling locations and marinas.

Outdoor Emergency Disconnects for Dwelling Units:
Outdoor emergency disconnects are now required for new construction, homes undergoing renovations, and homes having their service replaced. This allows first responders to respond to emergencies, such as a house fire, without potential electrical hazards. Emergency disconnects may be a service disconnect, a meter disconnect, or listed disconnect switches or circuit breakers on the supply side of each device disconnect suitable for use as service equipment.

Install CFLs or LED Lights Where You Can

New lighting technology has really come a long ways. Now although they do cost more than traditional incandescent bulbs, CFL and LED bulbs can last for years without having to replace them. You don’t even need to replace every bulb in the house at once. Even swapping just your four or five most-used light bulbs can save you $45 or more a year!

CFL vs. LED

CFLs, which use a quarter of the energy of incandescent bulbs and last for years, are the next cheapest option after traditional bulbs. But they also have some drawbacks: They take a while to warm up to full brightness, and they also contain a small amount of mercury.

Meanwhile, LEDs are more expensive. However, they’re getting cheaper all the time, and they are easily the best lighting option available: They light up instantly, are efficient as CFLs, produce a warm glow without getting hot to the touch, and can last for decades.

Pool and Spa Safety Tips

• All outdoor receptacles should be covered to keep them dry. This is especially important around pools, spas and other summer water activities.
• Use a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) for electrical devices used outside to help prevent electrocutions and electric shock injuries.
• Make sure all electrical equipment used for swimming pools (even the cleaning equipment) is grounded.
• Electrical devices and cords should be kept at least 10 feet away from water sources such as pools and spas. When possible, use battery operated electrical devices outside.
• Never handle electrical devices when you are wet – either from water activities or from perspiration.
• Make sure there are no power lines over a swimming pool.
• Do not swim during a thunderstorm.
• To avoid electric shock drowning, have an electrician inspect and upgrade your pool, spa or hot tub in accordance with applicable local codes and the National Electrical Code® (NEC).
