A wide chimney can collect a surprising amount of runoff on its uphill side. A properly sized cricket divides that water and sends it toward both roof slopes instead of letting it press against the flashing. During a roof check, look for continuous counterflashing, open drainage paths, and debris trapped behind the chimney. Keeping that area clear helps the flashing shed water as designed and reduces the chance of hidden wood damage.
