A little change can make a big difference!

This project was a fun one for us at Courtyard Creations!

The old concrete steps were beginning to break down, so we removed them and replaced them with cedar steps, finished with stain for the look our client wanted.

Sometimes, it's not about a major renovation or a huge transformation. It's about taking something that isn't working anymore and giving it a fresh start!

We love seeing how a simple improvement can change the look and feel of an entrance. And this before-and-after is a great example!

FALL IS HERE, AND IT’S FRIDAY!

Chilly mornings, changing leaves, cooler evenings… and the perfect excuse to gather around the fire!

Let’s settle an important Friday question…

What’s your favorite treat around the fire?

At our house, the kids love hot dogs first, followed by s’mores! But we like to mix things up a little! Give us Reese’s, Caramellos, or Hershey’s Cookies ’n’ Creme, along with that marshmallow goodness and graham crackers, and we’re ready for a sweet treat!

Now we’re curious… what’s a MUST-HAVE around your fire? Are you team hot dog, classic s’mores, or do you have a favorite chocolate combination we need to try?

☕ Happy International Coffee Day!

Here’s a little design thought to go with your coffee today:

Don’t start with the structure. Start with the moment.

Maybe it’s standing outside on a cool October morning with your first cup of coffee.

Maybe it’s having somewhere to set your coffee down while you read.

Maybe it’s being able to sit outside when it’s raining without getting wet.

Maybe it’s having a place where everyone naturally ends up talking long after dinner is over.

Those little moments can tell us a LOT about what a space actually needs.

And sometimes the answer isn't what you initially thought.

You might think you need a deck…
when what you really need is a comfortable place to sit.

You might think you need a pergola…
when what you really need is shade at a certain time of day.

You might think you need a fire pit…
when what you really want is a reason for everyone to stay outside a little longer.

Good design starts with the “why” before the “what.”

When you’re dreaming about upgrading, fixing, or adding a new outdoor space, it’s easy to picture the finished project without thinking through one very important question:

How am I actually going to use it?

Maybe you want a dining table where your family can eat together.
Maybe you want a comfortable seating area for friends.
Maybe you want a grill, a fire pit, or space for the kids (and the dog!) to move around.

But will the space actually be large enough to do those things comfortably?

Sometimes a client has a beautiful vision for a dining area, only to discover that the table they want leaves very little room to pull out a chair or walk around it.

And sometimes the opposite happens—a large space is created when a smaller, more intentional space would have done everything they needed.

Both can become an expensive lesson.

That’s why we think about the “how,” the “what,” and the placement before we ever pick up a tool.

What furniture do you want?
How will people move through the space?
How much room do you really need?
What do you want the space to do for you?

Because the goal isn't simply to build a bigger space.

It's to build the right space for you.

Your vision matters. So does the planning behind it.

Things you might not realize happen before we build anything…

There’s a LOT of talking. 😂

We ask questions.

A LOT of questions.

“What do you want to use this space for?”

“What drives you crazy about your current space?”

“What would make you actually use it more?”

“What do you absolutely NOT want?”

Because before we start building, we want to understand the people who are going to use the space.

Sometimes the best part of a project isn’t something we build…

It’s figuring out what you actually need.

That’s where your vision starts becoming reality.
