If you heat your home with a heat pump, there are a few things you may notice this winter that look like a problem but usually aren’t.

1. The air coming from the vents doesn’t feel very hot. That’s normal. A heat pump typically delivers warm air around 90–100°F, so it can feel almost cool against your 98°F skin. A gas furnace produces much hotter air, which is why the difference can be noticeable.

If the thermostat is holding temperature, the system may be working exactly as designed.

2. The outdoor unit is running, steaming, or making a strange whoosh. Before you panic, it may just be going through a defrost cycle. When frost builds up on the outdoor coil, the heat pump briefly reverses itself to melt the ice. You may see steam and hear the system change sounds.

A few minutes later, it should return to normal heating.

3. It seems like the heat pump runs forever. Also normal. Heat pumps are designed to run longer, steadier cycles instead of blasting the house with short bursts of very hot air. Longer run times do not automatically mean something is wrong.

One more thing every heat pump owner should know: AUX HEAT and EMERGENCY HEAT are not the same thing.

Aux heat comes on automatically when your heat pump needs a little extra help on colder days.

Emergency heat is a manual setting meant for situations where the heat pump itself has failed. It can rely heavily on electric resistance heat, which can get expensive quickly.

So if the house feels a little chilly, **don’t automatically switch the thermostat to Emergency Heat.

Before the heat runs all winter, check your carbon monoxide detectors this weekend.

CO has no smell and no color. A gas furnace that is venting properly is safe. One that is not can put CO into your house without a single warning sign until people start feeling sick.

Three minutes of work: Press the test button on every detector Replace the batteries even if it did not chirp Check the date on the back. Most CO detectors expire after 7 to 10 years and stop being reliable after that Confirm you have one on every level, especially near sleeping areas

If you do not have a working CO detector in your home, get one this week. It is the cheapest safety equipment you will ever buy.

And if you want your furnace checked for safe combustion and venting before heating season, that is what we are here for.

Apple season, fire pits, and the Parkway starting to turn. Fall in the Valley does not miss.

We have been in and out of homes across Staunton, Waynesboro, Fishersville, and Stuarts Draft all month getting systems ready for the cold, and it is a good time of year to do this work.

If your furnace is over 15 years old, this is the month to have the repair or replace conversation. Not December.

Two reasons.

First, when a 20 year old system fails in January, you are making a five figure decision in a cold house with whoever can get there fastest. That is the worst possible position to be in.

Second, right now you have time to compare options, look at efficiency ratings, and check what rebates or financing are available. In an emergency, none of that happens.

We are not going to tell you to replace a system that has good years left. We will tell you what we actually see and let you decide with real numbers in front of you.

You turn the heat on for the first time and the house smells like something is burning. Here is what that actually is.

Dust settles on the heat exchanger and burners all summer. The first time the furnace fires, that dust burns off. The smell is normal and it should fade within 20 to 30 minutes.

What is not normal: The smell sticking around for hours or coming back every cycle A sharp electrical or plastic smell Any smell like rotten eggs, which means gas. Leave the house and call the gas company first.

If it is anything past that first dusty half hour, shut it down and call us. That one is worth a phone call.

If your allergies have been rough the past two weeks, you are not imagining it. Ragweed peaks in Virginia in mid September, and pollen counts around the Valley are near their highest point of the year right now.

Here is the part people miss. You spend most of your day indoors, and every bit of that pollen rides in on clothes, pets, and open doors. Your HVAC system is what decides whether it keeps circulating or gets pulled out of the air.

Two things that make a real difference: A clean filter, changed on schedule instead of when you remember. Make sure you are using the right filter rating for your equipment, not just the most expensive one on the shelf.

Changing your filter out every 2 months versus every 3 months is a better option than not getting proper air flow and overworking your system.
