A more expensive HVAC filter isn’t automatically a better filter for your system.

Filters with very high filtration ratings can catch smaller particles but they can also restrict airflow if your HVAC system wasn’t designed for them.

And restricted airflow can lead to:

• Longer run times
• Higher energy use
• Less comfortable rooms
• Extra strain on your blower motor
• Frozen AC coils

The goal isn’t to buy the filter with the biggest number on the package.

The goal is to use the right filter for your system and change it before it becomes clogged.

The first cold morning of fall is a bad time to find out your heat isn’t working.

Your heating system has probably been sitting mostly unused for months. Before temperatures really drop, turn the heat on and let it run for a little while.

Pay attention to:

• Strange noises
• Burning smells that don’t go away
• Weak airflow
• Rooms that aren’t warming evenly
• A system that starts and stops repeatedly

A little dust smell when the heat first comes on can be normal. A strong electrical or burning smell that continues is not.

Testing your system now gives you time to deal with a problem before everyone else in the Valley turns their heat on at the same time.

Your AC is running. So why does the house still feel uncomfortable?

Before assuming your system is failing, there are a few things worth checking:

• Is the air filter dirty?
• Are supply vents blocked by furniture or rugs?
• Are some rooms noticeably warmer than others?
• Is the outdoor unit covered in grass, leaves, or debris?

Poor airflow can make a perfectly good HVAC system work harder than it should and can make certain rooms feel like they never quite cool down.

If your system is running constantly but your home still isn’t comfortable, that’s usually a sign it’s worth having someone take a closer look.

Late August is when we get the most calls.

Your AC has been running since May. Whatever was a little off in June is fully broken by now, and it usually shows up the same way: the system runs and runs and the house never quite gets cool.

Sometimes that is a capacitor. Cheap part, quick fix.

Sometimes it is low refrigerant, which means you have a leak somewhere. Topping it off without finding the leak just means you are paying for the same repair again next summer.

The two feel identical from your living room. They are not the same bill.

If your system has been struggling this month, call before it quits on you. Lucas will tell you which one you are looking at. If it is something you can handle yourself, he will tell you that too.

Why isn’t my outside AC unit turning on?

Your thermostat is set to cool. Air may even be coming from the vents. But the outside unit is completely quiet.

Before calling for service, check a few simple things:

• Make sure the thermostat is set to “COOL”
• Check whether the air filter is severely clogged
• Look for a tripped breaker
• Make sure the outdoor disconnect has not been turned off
• Check whether the indoor system is running

If a breaker has tripped, you can reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call a professional. Repeatedly resetting it could create a safety issue or damage the system.

The problem could be a failed capacitor, contact, thermostat connection, safety switch, or another electrical issue.

Is a frozen AC unit an emergency?

A frozen AC usually does not require calling 911, but it does need your attention.

Continuing to run a frozen system can strain the compressor and potentially lead to a much more expensive repair.

If you see ice on the indoor coil or refrigerant lines:

1. Turn the cooling system off
2. Set the thermostat fan to “ON”
3. Check the air filter
4. Give the system time to thaw
5. Do not chip or scrape the ice away

A dirty filter can cause freezing, but so can low refrigerant, restricted airflow, a blower problem, or a dirty coil. If the ice returns after the system thaws, it is time to have it inspected.

Why is my AC running constantly?

On an extremely hot day, your AC may need to run longer than usual. But if it rarely shuts off or your home still feels warm, something may be wrong.

Common causes include:

• A dirty air filter
• Low refrigerant
• A thermostat problem
• Dirty indoor or outdoor coils
• Leaky ductwork
• An AC system that is struggling to keep up

Start by checking your filter and making sure your vents are open. If the system keeps running without cooling your home properly, it is worth having it checked before a small issue turns into a larger repair.
