During hot, humid weather, septic odors can become much more noticeable because heat speeds up the natural breakdown of organic matter inside the septic tank, which can increase the production of gases such as hydrogen sulfide—the familiar “rotten egg” smell. Humidity also makes odors linger in the air rather than dispersing quickly.

In hot weather, odors that are normally present in very small amounts can simply become easier to detect. However, a persistent or unusually strong odor may indicate something that should be checked. Stay on top of your basic septic maintenance…pump your tank every 3-5 years, use water wisely, don't flush things that may be harmful to your system and keep your drain field clear.
