🚜 FROM STARBUCKS TO SKID STEERS 🚜

Years ago, I was working at Starbucks, going to school full time, and just beginning DJ’s Lawn Care & Landscaping. One of the friends I worked with back then recently needed a carport pad and future playground area—and she and her husband had enough faith in us to make the call.

God made dirt, and dirt don’t hurt—but you still need a good plan before you start moving it! 🙏

The mission:

✅ Grade a 20' × 25' carport pad
✅ Use the excavated soil to build up the playground area
✅ Remove and cover the stumps
✅ Create reliable drainage
✅ Leave everything smooth and ready for the next phase

We called 811 before beginning. Once onsite, we discovered a major power line and internet cable crossing the excavation zone. ⚡ Instead of taking unnecessary risks, we stopped and changed the plan.

📐 We mapped the site with our laser level and grade rod.

🧠 We spent nearly an hour developing a safe plan before starting the machine.

🚧 We reduced the deepest cut, built up the shallow side, and stayed safely beyond the marked utilities.

💧 We created drainage toward both the driveway and side yard so water shouldn’t collect beneath the future gravel.

We also extended the pad slightly beyond 20' × 25', rounded the corners, opened a drainage path, smoothed the side yard, and compacted the future playground area.

They offered to cut the stumps before we arrived, but this is white-glove service. If we have the equipment to handle it, our customers shouldn’t have to do the work. 💪

Looking back at where this business started, I can’t help but thank God for answered prayers and every opportunity He has placed in front of us. We still have plenty to learn, but we’re grateful for how far He has brought us.

⚠️ Wouldn’t it be great if there were an 811 for life—something that marked every hidden danger before we stepped into it?

On a recent project, we discovered a major power line running directly beneath the area we were preparing to dig. We couldn’t see it, but because we called before digging, we knew it was there and changed our plan.

It reminded me how similar that is to life.

From the very beginning, God warned Adam and Eve not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The danger was clearly marked, but they chose not to listen—and we all know what followed.

God’s Word still gives us warnings, boundaries, and guidance for dangers we may not see. Sometimes we ignore those markings and dig ahead anyway. But when we slow down, observe, and listen, life becomes much simpler—and often much safer. 🙏

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” — Psalm 119:105

Call before you dig—and pray before you move. Some of the greatest dangers are the ones hidden beneath the surface.

I love driving by an old project and seeing it still holding up to the test of time!

We built these decorative retaining walls two years ago, and they’re still level, strong, and looking as good as new. Apparently, they understood the assignment better than some people do. 😂

A beautiful wall is nice—but a firm foundation is what makes it last. The same is true in life: when we build on God’s Word, we can stand strong through every storm.

A little behind-the-scenes look at what it really takes to keep the work moving. 🚜💪

We started the day using the Harley Rake to quickly smooth out a gravel driveway and bring it back to life for a customer. It made quick work of the driveway, and then we moved on to a bush hogging job.

That project decided to fight back. 😅

My 2013 John Deere tractor finally decided it was time for a new battery. It definitely didn't owe me anything, but the timing couldn't have been worse.

The tractor died after I unloaded it and stopped to talk with the customer. We jumped it off, kept moving, and got the bush hogging done. We were able to knock down an overgrown property, get it looking good again, and get the customer taken care of the same day at a great price. 🌱🚜

Then I shut the tractor off to load it back onto the trailer... and you guessed it. Dead again. 😂 At that point, I knew we weren't dealing with a fluke.

The next day we grabbed a new battery. After a little disassembly and a whole lot of frustration, we finally got it installed. The tractor is back up and running great. 🔧

Then it was on to the next problem: the brakes on our 20-foot equipment trailer.

We tracked the issue down to a short in the brake wiring inside the axle. Instead of putting it back together the same way, we reran the wiring along the outside of the axle, heat-shrinked all the connections, and secured everything so it will be much easier to inspect and maintain in the future. 🛠️

These are the parts of running a lawn care and landscaping business that people don't always see.

You see the smooth driveway, the finished lawn, and the completed project. Behind that finished result are broken parts, troubleshooting, repairs, long days, and figuring out how to keep moving when equipment decides it has other plans.

It's not always easy, but the struggle is part of what makes the finished result worthwhile. 💪

🌱 STEP 5 TURF TREATMENT IS UNDERWAY! 🌱

Fall is getting closer, and right now is an important time to prepare our lawns for what comes next.

During Step 5, we are putting a strong focus on w**d control while there is still enough summer heat for our treatments to work effectively. For our cool-season lawns, this helps us prepare for the upcoming fall growing season. For Bermuda lawns, there is still valuable time left to grow, spread, and strengthen before cooler weather arrives.

Good results rarely happen overnight. They come from patience, preparation, and taking care of the little things at the right time.

📖 “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.” — Ecclesiastes 3:1

There is a season for growth, a season for preparation, and a season to enjoy the results of the work that was put in along the way.

We are working through our Step 5 treatments one lawn at a time, giving each property the attention and care it deserves. 🌿☀️

I just want to give a great big shout-out to Green Briar Cafe and Pharmacy in Statesville, North Carolina. Not only is their food of tremendous value, but it's also delicious. The owner, John, was nice enough to let me top off my spray tank while I took a lunch. He didn't have to do this, but he really saved my bacon. I would have had to drive across the county to fill up at the shop because I miscalculated.

If you’ve been following me for a while, you may have noticed a new tone around here lately.

What can I say? When God hits your heart, you don’t say no. 🙏

Sometimes He gets your attention in ways you never expected, takes away the things you love most, and reminds you what really matters. I’m still me. Still working, learning, building, and probably making a few mistakes along the way. I’m just trying to listen a little closer now.

And if you don’t like the music, you can still follow us — just hit the mute button. 😂

I wouldn’t recommend it, though.

God’s Word is good. ✝️

I advertise for myself every day, and I know you guys love seeing the footage of what we're out there doing. But today, I want to talk about another great local business - one that really doesn't need much of an introduction.

Shane Daniel is a great guy, a longtime friend of mine, a family man, and somebody who has built an HVAC business by simply being very good at what he does.

Now, sometimes Shane can be a little hard to get ahold of - and I think that's because everybody else already knows how good he is too.

But when I got in touch with him, he was at my house within 30 minutes, and he already had the part I needed sitting in his truck.

And he didn't just replace the part and leave.

He cleaned the coils, checked the Freon, went through the system, and pulled out professional calibration tools that I couldn't even begin to tell you the names of. You could tell immediately that he wasn't guessing. He knew exactly what he was looking at and exactly what needed to be done.

That's the kind of local business I like supporting.

If your heat goes out, your air quits working, or you need somebody who actually knows HVAC inside and out, Shane and All Done Heating and Air are the way to go.
