Mice and Rats: How to Identify, Prevent, and Control Rodents
Mice and rats are unwelcome visitors in any home. These rodents can contaminate food, damage building materials, and carry pathogens that cause illness. Managing them takes more than catching the animals you see: effective rodent control also means removing food sources, closing entry points, and eliminating nesting areas.
This guide explains the differences between mice and rats, the signs of a rodent infestation, and practical ways to protect your home.
What Is the Difference Between Mice and Rats?
Although mice and rats are both rodents, they differ in appearance, behavior, and preferred nesting locations. Common home-invading rodents include house mice, Norway rats, and roof rats.
How to Control Mice and Rats Inside Your Home
If rodents are already indoors, combine trapping with entry-point repairs and removal of food sources.
The CDC recommends traditional snap traps for reducing rodent populations around the home. Choose the correct size for mice or rats, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and position traps where you have found evidence of activity. Check them daily.
Keep all traps and baits out of reach of children and pets. If rodenticides are used, the EPA states that poison baits must be placed in tamper-resistant bait stations.
Removing rodents without sealing entry points does not address how they got inside. Treat trapping and prevention as parts of the same process.
