Congratulations and best of luck to Akwasi Douglas, who recently began work as a pre-apprentice pipefitter at STL Direct Mechanical!

As a member of Cohort 7 of the CHAMPIONS Initiative, Akwasi took part in intensive technical training and wraparound professional development over the summer to prepare for an enriching new career in the pipe trades. He will continue to receive targeted mentorship and peer support over the coming year as he progresses toward apprenticeship.

The Mechanical Contractors Association of America Student Chapters at University of Missouri-St. Louis and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville are kicking off another year, and these students did not wait for the semester to start to get to work! During the final two weeks of their summer break, students from both chapters took on an intensive mini-project designed to prepare them for the MCAA National Student Chapter Competition. They were given just 11 days to complete the project from start to finish.

Working from a project developed by MCAA National Education Initiative instructor Troy Aichele, students reviewed project information, developed a mechanical construction schedule, worked through estimating and planning decisions, and prepared a formal proposal presentation for a panel of contractors. The short turnaround gave them a chance to work through some of the same challenges they will face when they take on the larger competition project this year, while getting feedback directly from professionals in the industry.

Our thanks go out to the mechanical professionals from C&R Mechanical, Murphy Company, Integrated Facility Services, and icon Mechanical who volunteered their time to advise the students, ask questions, and provide feedback on their final presentations. Together, we're investing in the future of our industry.

FORE! 🏌️‍♀️ Thursday was a perfect evening for Session I of our golf clinic, sponsored by our Women in the Mechanical Industry (WiMI) Committee. With skill and humor, Maria Palozola of St. Louis Golf Lessons provided us with excellent group and individual coaching on the full swing and the short game. From newbies ("Which one is the sand wedge?") to experienced golfers ("I just played 18 holes"), everyone walked away with improvements in their game and a smile on their face. Thanks to Tower Tee Golf & Recreation for providing a great setting in which to build both skills and relationships that enhance our members' professional networks. We'll see you in two weeks for our sold-out Session II!
