One of the things we love most about permanent roofline lighting is the ability to celebrate meaningful moments like this with a simple red, white, and blue tribute at home.

Behind our clients' beautifully lit homes is a team that cares enough to keep getting better. In our latest blog, Matt shares why we’re investing in training, traveling to industry events, and growing our team the right way:

For a lot of homeowners, holiday lighting has always been a seasonal tradition. Pull out the boxes. Untangle strands. Climb the ladder. Get everything just right before the weather turns. It’s something people have done for years. But recently, more homeowners are starting to ask a simple questio

When people look at a growing business, they usually see the visible parts.
They see the trucks.
The jobs.
The finished projects.
The team out in the field.
The photos of homes lit up at night.
And I’m proud of all of that.

But what people don’t always see is what happens behind the scenes. They don’t see the long nights, the stress, the missed sleep, the hard conversations, the sacrifices at home, or the people quietly helping hold everything together.

For me, that person has always been my wife, Kelsey.

And the truth is, I don’t think I could have built this business without her.

Kelsey and I met back in May of 2019, and honestly, she had no idea what she was signing herself up for. She didn’t just meet me, she met the chaos of my early entrepreneurship.

That same year, I bought out a local company’s holiday lighting division, which added roughly 400 clients to the business almost overnight. At the time, it felt like an incredible opportunity. And it was. But we also found out pretty quickly what that kind of growth can do when you don’t yet have the right systems, processes, or team in place.

We grew too fast.

We had made commitments to clients, and we were determined to honor them. But behind the scenes, it was chaotic. There were emails coming in constantly. Customers needed answers. Jobs needed to be scheduled. Bids needed to be sent. Service questions needed responses. Everything had to keep moving.

And Kelsey jumped in with me. Not casually. Not just here and there. She was in it with me.

She stayed up through the night. She helped answer emails. She helped keep customers informed. She helped carry the back end of the business at a time when I truly needed someone in the trenches with me.

There were nights where we were up answering emails, working through customer needs, trying to keep the season moving and making sure we followed through on what we said we were going to do.

Looking back, I don’t know that I would still have the business I have today if it wasn’t for her.

That season exposed a lot for me as a business owner. It showed me what happens when you try to do too much too quickly without the right structure around you. It showed me the importance of systems. It showed me the importance of building a great team.

And it showed me that if you’re going to grow something meaningful, you need people around you who are willing to believe in you even when things are hard.

Kelsey did that for me.

Since then, we’ve made huge strides as a company. We’ve become more organized, more efficient, more educated, and more intentional about the way we operate. But a big reason I’ve had the freedom to keep investing my time, energy, and focus into making the business better is because of what Kelsey does at home.
She runs the show around our house.

She makes sure the kids have what they need. She keeps everyone on task with school, activities, schedules, and everything else that comes with raising a family. She handles projects around the house. She cuts the grass. She does things before I even realize they need to be done.

And she does it in a way that takes as much off my plate as she possibly can.

That kind of support is hard to explain unless you’ve lived it. It’s not always flashy. It’s not always visible. It doesn’t always get recognized the way it should. But it matters every single day.
Kelsey is an extremely selfless person. She puts in the work for our family on a daily basis, and that gives me the ability to show up for this business the way I do.

She has also changed the way I think about success.

As an entrepreneur, it’s easy to get caught up in the grind. There is always another call, another estimate, another job, another idea, another problem to solve. It can be easy to convince yourself that working more is always the answer.

But Kelsey has helped me understand what I truly value.
She has helped me realize that I need to manage my time better so I can be more present for my family. She motivates me to stay focused during the day so I don’t drag work into every part of our life. She makes me want to get home quicker. She makes me want to be there, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally too.
The hard work she puts in makes me want to work harder for her – but also be better for her.

She has made me more focused. More driven. More aware of what really matters.

At the end of the day, my “why” is my family.

The business matters deeply to me. I love what we’re building. I love our team. I love our clients. I love the landscape lighting and outdoor lighting work we get to do.

But the reason I keep pushing, growing, learning, and trying to build something better is because I want to create a life for my family that gives us more freedom, more flexibility, and more time together in the future.

Kelsey has given me the support and space to chase that.

And I know I probably don’t tell her as often as she deserves to hear it, but I appreciate everything she has done for me, for our family, and for this business.

Even when it isn’t recognized every day, I think about it all the time.
I think about the freedom she gives me to follow my passion. I think about the way she has supported me through stressful seasons, long nights, and big decisions. I think about the way she has helped shape my mindset and remind me what all of this is really for.

Thank you, Kelsey, for believing in me.
Thank you for carrying more than people see.
Thank you for helping hold our family together while I work to build something meaningful.
Thank you for giving me the freedom to continue chasing this dream.

You may not always be the person people see when they think about Landscape Lighting Guys.

But you’re a huge reason it exists the way it does today.
And I couldn’t have built this without you.
