A space heater should warm the room - not the outlet.

Before you plug one in:
• Plug it directly into a wall outlet - never an extension cord or power strip.
• Don’t plug another device into the same outlet.
• Keep the heater at least three feet from curtains, furniture, bedding, papers, clothing, and anything else that can burn.
• Place it on a flat, level surface - not furniture or carpet.
• Never leave a space heater running unattended or while you sleep.
• Inspect the heater’s cord and plug before using it.

If the plug or outlet becomes unusually hot, loose, discolored, or begins buzzing or smelling burned, turn off the heater, unplug it if it is safe to do so, and stop using it.

Your electrical panel shouldn’t feel hot.

As furnaces, heaters, and other seasonal equipment begin running more often, increased electrical demand may expose problems that were already developing.

Pay attention to warning signs around your electrical panel, including:

• Unusual heat
• Buzzing or crackling sounds
• A burning or unusual electrical odor
• Discoloration or scorch marks
• Moisture, rust, or corrosion
• Breakers that trip repeatedly

A breaker that keeps tripping is not something to continually reset. It may be warning you about an overloaded circuit, faulty equipment, or another electrical problem.

Never remove the panel cover or attempt to diagnose the problem yourself. If you notice any of these warning signs, keep your distance and contact Electric MD.

When did you last test every smoke and carbon monoxide detector in your home?

As heating season gets underway, take a few minutes to make sure these important safety devices are ready:

• Test each detector using its test button and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
• Check the manufacture date. Smoke detectors generally need to be replaced after 10 years.
• Replace batteries when required - but remember that some detectors use sealed batteries.
• Current Fire Code Requirements are to have smoke detectors installed on every level, inside bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas. Are you properly protected?
• Don’t ignore chirping. Check the manufacturer’s instructions to determine what your detector is telling you.

Interconnected detectors offer another layer of protection: when one sounds, they all sound, helping alert people throughout the home.

Take five minutes today to test every detector in your home.

The worst time to find out your backup power isn’t ready is after the lights go out.

A whole-house standby generator is designed to step in when utility power fails, but the entire system needs to be ready before an outage happens.

Before the next storm:

• Confirm that routine system tests are completing without warning lights or error messages.
• Keep the generator enclosure and surrounding area clear of leaves, debris, and obstructions.
• Follow the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule.
• Have the electrical connections and transfer equipment inspected if they haven’t been checked recently.
• Never open the enclosure or attempt electrical repairs yourself.

The transfer switch is what safely separates utility power from generator power and allows your home to move from one power source to the other. That separation also helps prevent dangerous backfeeding.

Have questions about safely connecting backup power to your home or business? Contact Electric MD before the next outage.

THE REVEAL: It’s a weatherhead! Johnathon Hartupee with the winning guess!

A weatherhead sits at the top of an electrical service mast where overhead power lines enter a home or building. Its hooded design helps shield that entry point from rain and moisture.

It’s one of those electrical components most people have seen countless times without ever knowing its name.

~~
You’ve probably seen one of these above a roofline—but do you know what it is?

Drop your best guess in the comments. Wrong answers are welcome, too. 😄

We’ll reveal the answer—and explain what this electrical “thingy” actually does—a little later.

When you've trusted someone with your home before, you know exactly who to call when something unexpected happens.

Joan had used Electric MD several years ago. So when a semi-emergency involving her outdoor outlets came up, she called us again.

Josh found an electrician working nearby, and he was at her house within 10 minutes. Problem identified. Errors corrected. Everything fixed. ⚡

That's the kind of service we're proud to provide—and we're especially grateful when a customer trusts us enough to call again years later.

Thank you for the wonderful review and recommendation, Joan!
