I am beyond shattered, my dear sweet Gunny, the face of this company, passed yesterday, due to illness she could not overcome. All of the money, love and care could not prevent a swift decline, that was painful to watch. She was the kindest most gentle soul you’d ever meet. (Unless you were a rabbit or squirrel in the back yard) she shown so much light in our household. Run free Gummy! Needless to say orders are slowed a bit, but still going out. I need a few days. She will live on as the face of the company. Sam(antha) will be taking over duties as CEO. She’s a Shepsky. Part GSD and Husky.

Next into the oil. A final hand sand is basically a final examination of the carve, and the hang. 320 grit exposes checks that hide in grits like 180 or 220. Could I fill it with CA glue and go about my business? I have a test axe with multiple checks in the handle. I CA glued all of them. We’re 4 years out, and it’s holding together fine. I like Titebond CA glue for strength. Starbond for general purpose. However, folks aren’t paying for a filled defect. So what happens? You have to contact the customer who’s already been waiting, and tell them you have to start over. It’s never pleasant. Having 15 or so axes ready to go and one “do over”, is a massive logistical challenge. I’ve had defects show up 2/3 of the way into carving. Over grown checks, knots. Wood is crazy. Keep standards high! It’s worth it! .com

Sometimes one wedge is sufficient. When it’s sufficient, I use one wedge. Hand forged eyes have their bumps and warts. They are uniform but not machined. They have symmetry, but they are not the result of an engineer and machinist’s die. The walls of the eye have individual topography. Each hand forged axe is a product of an idea, and a blacksmith’s eye, experience, and intuition. Every single axe has its own signature. They are similar, but avoid the “sameness” of mass production.
I use multiple wedges based on what the hang is telling me. Rather than relying on one wedge to provide compression for the entire head, using multiple wedges allows you to control the compression. Incrementally, and directionally. It’s fun to use different woods to create contrast. I kind of like using hickory from the same billet the handle came from. Subtlety is not overrated. .com

Check out the oil level in the beginning and end. Guess I need to rig up a reservoir with a little pump. One more axe and it’s all over the floor. lol They are rolling off the line. Yay! .com
