Planting Trees and Shrubs in The Summer

SOAK YOUR ROOT BALL. I cannot stress this enough! Take your shrub/tree/plant out of its pot/bag and submerge the root ball in enough water to cover the root ball. It will more than likely try to float, push it down under the water and hold it until it stops trying to float. LET IT SOAK FOR AT LEAST 5 MINUTES, but not more than 15 minutes. I use a plastic tote to soak my trees.

While you are soaking your tree or shrub, you can dig your hole. Dig it twice as wide and twice as deep as the root ball is. If you need to amend your soil, use good topsoil, or compost and mix it with your soil 50/50. Do not use potting mix that is for flowerpots. Backfill your hole so that your plant/tree/shrub will only be planted as deep as it was in its pot and fill your hole with water and let in soak into the soil.
Now take your plant/tree/shrub out of the water and GENTLEY loosen its roots up with your hands, getting off as much of the soil that is on the root ball as possible. Set your plant/tree/shrub in your hole and backfill around it, making sure not to plant it any deeper than it was in its pot.
Water it well once again to get any air pockets out and mulch around it with 4” of mulch. Making sure and keep the mulch pulled back at least 6” from the base of your plant/tree/shrub. Give your plant/tree/shrub a good deep watering every week through the summer that we don’t get at least an inch of rain (at least 2 gallons).
Don’t fertilize when you first plant it. Wait 6 weeks after planting they apply a slow release fertilizer.
