Should every check in a log home be caulked? No. A check is a natural split in a log, and many do not require sealant. Upward-facing checks approximately ¼ inch or wider that can collect water should be evaluated for proper sealing.

• Determine whether a log check should be caulked
• Prepare and tape the surrounding wood
• Select and install the correct backer rod
• Create two-point adhesion for flexible movement
• Apply and tool the caulk for a clean, natural-looking finish
• Remove the tape before the caulk skins over
Backer rod controls the depth of the caulk and prevents it from bonding to the bottom of the check. This allows the sealant to stretch and compress as the logs naturally expand and contract.
