Here is an article from the Decatur Herald & Review for the Nelson Boat Ramp project. MEC provided civil engineering, land surveying, and assistance with concepts for the public input on the preferred ramp and courtesy dock layout for the City of Decatur.
,

Replacing the existing Nelson Park boat ramps will cost $794,000, but that's a lot cheaper than the estimate. ⤵️ Find a link to the story in the comments.

Construction is underway on Phase 2 of improvements to Southeast High School. Phase 1 was completed last year and was the football complex. Phase 2 is the creation of two new Large parking lots. This project will provide more on-site parking for larger crowds and also serves to replace the parking lot currently located at the northwest corner of Cornell Avenue and Taylor Avenue. Phase 3 will be next year and that will be for a new Fieldhouse, which will be located where the old parking lot used to be .

Graham & Hyde Architects, Inc. are the project architects, and our client , for all of this. Otto Baum Company, Inc. is the general contractor for Phase 2, which will be a concrete parking lot. Petersburg Plumbing and Excavating, LLC. served as a subcontractor to Otto Baum, and provided the storm sewer installation for the project.

Way out on West Wabash, next to Green Nissan, we are just completing the infrastructure work for a joint venture of SIU School of Medicine and Memorial Hospital. Hurwitz Enterprises was the "Project Manager" for the joint venture.

MEC conducted a punch list today with representatives from SIU School of Medicine, Memorial Hospital, Hurwitz Enterprises, The City of Springfield, EL Pruitt, and Truman Flatt & Sons. Yesterday we energized the traffic signals on Wabash Avenue. Egizii Electric was our traffic signal contractor.

This entire local team worked very well together throughout the project. This project could be the start of something bigger in this area of Springfield.

Our next nominees in our Lifetime Small Business Awards Category for The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce is Phil Martin and Steve Walker of Martin Engineering Company of Illinois. MEC provides civil engineering and land surveying services for both public and private entities. They work in partnership to achieve their clients' goals with a primary regard to public safety.

This is a business built on legacy and integrity. Phil's dad started the company in 1982 and Phil's first job was on the survey crew at the age of 16. To follow in his dad's footsteps, he became an engineer and worked for some time in Chicago building up his resume before coming back home. In the meantime, Steve was hired on straight out of college as a Professional Land Surveyor. By 2003, they had purchased the business together and became partners. This is a particularly special time to photograph and honor them as nominees together, because in September they plan to complete a transfer of ownership to Steve's son so that the 3rd generation (lovingly referred to as G3) will keep guiding the company through dedicated service to the Springfield community, because they know that local knowledge is invaluable. There is no doubt you have seen their work. They have been heavily involved in the Scheels Sports Park most recently, Lincolnshire, Steeplechase in Sherman, Panther Creek Subdivision, the Woodlands in Rochester, Cherry Hills, First United, banks, worked with The Springfield Park District, The Springfield Airport Authority, The Sangamon County Water Reclamation District, apartment complexes...you name it.

That saying, "Love what you do and you'll never work a day in your life." is exactly how both Steve and Phil feel about the legacy they have built over the last 35 years in business as an integral part of this community. Congratulations to you both! What an amazing legacy you leave behind. It was my absolute joy to have you in the studio and hear your story. Cheers to a beautiful chapter and an amazing journey!
