A Fresh Roof, With a Little Extra Coordination! ☀️🏠

Another beautiful roof replacement completed in Annandale!

This home received a new Owens Corning Platinum Roofing System with TruDefinition Duration shingles in Onyx Black, giving it a refreshed look and a comprehensive system built for lasting protection.

But this project came with an additional scheduling consideration: the homeowner's existing solar panels.

When a roof needs replacement beneath solar panels, the timing matters. We coordinated with the homeowner around the solar company's schedule, completing our roofing work between panel removal and reinstallation.

And there was plenty to accomplish during that window!

Our crew replaced 16 sheets of plywood, installed the complete roofing system, upgraded attic ventilation, and completed the necessary flashing details.

Once our work was finished, the solar company returned to reinstall the panels.

The finished roof combines Owens Corning's Onyx Black architectural shingles with the protection of a Platinum Roofing System, installed by an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor. 🧡

Onyx Black, From the Shingles to the Finishing Details! 🏠

There's something about a freshly installed architectural shingle roof that makes all the prep work worthwhile!

For this Annandale home, we installed Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration shingles in Onyx Black, creating a crisp, classic appearance that complements the home's exterior.

But take a closer look at the details.

Along the roof's peak, the Owens Corning VentSure filtered ridge vent helps warm, moist attic air escape as part of a balanced ventilation system.

We also installed new Lifetime Tool Ultimate Pipe Flashings and replaced the chimney flashing, including a reglet cut for a more secure connection to the masonry.

These finishing details may not attract as much attention as the shingles, but they're essential to a properly installed roof.

For this Annandale roof replacement, our crew installed an Owens Corning WeatherLock ice-and-water barrier in vulnerable areas, then ProArmor synthetic underlayment across the remaining roof surfaces.

Proper attic ventilation also plays an important role in managing heat and moisture. That's why this project included Owens Corning VentSure ridge ventilation and Raft-R-Mate ventilation baffles to help maintain airflow.

Removing old shingles is only part of a roof replacement. What we find underneath can make a big difference in the work that follows.

Once our crew exposed the decking on this Annandale home, we identified areas requiring replacement. In total, 16 sheets of plywood were replaced before installing the new roofing materials.

Why does that matter? Because even the best shingles need a solid foundation!

Have Solar Panels? You Can Still Replace Your Roof! ☀️🏠

Solar panels are a great investment, but what happens when the roof underneath them needs replacing?

That's exactly what we planned for on this Annandale project!

The homeowner's existing solar panels covered large portions of the roof, so replacing the shingles required extra coordination.

☀️ The homeowner's solar company provided a window between removing and reinstalling the panels, and our crew worked within that schedule to complete the roof replacement. It's a great example of why coordinating different contractors is so important on projects like this!

🔎 Why can't roofers simply work around the panels?

Because a proper roof replacement involves removing the existing shingles, inspecting the decking, and installing new protective materials across the roof surface, including the areas beneath the solar panels.

Williamsburg Gray was a great match for this Fairfax Station home. 🏠✨

This Fairfax Station home has a fresh new look with Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration shingles in Williamsburg Gray. The blend of charcoal, soft gray, and subtle warmer tones complements the brick exterior, blue shutters, and white trim beautifully.

And there's a lot behind what you see here: repaired decking, new dormer trim, updated flashing, improved ventilation, reflashed skylights, and a complete Owens Corning Platinum Roofing System. Even the white drip edge was selected to coordinate cleanly with the home's exterior trim.

The result is a beautiful roof. The work underneath it is what makes the transformation complete.

Why would we remove a working attic fan when installing a new roof? 🤔🏠

Because more exhaust isn't automatically better ventilation.

On this Fairfax Station project, the existing attic fan was removed, and the opening was closed with new plywood. We added intake ventilation over the garage, with ridge ventilation providing exhaust at the top of the roof.

The goal is a coordinated airflow path through the attic, not several exhaust systems that could compete with one another.

We also retained and reflashed the home's existing skylights and addressed the flashing details throughout the new roof.

The little things aren't really little when they're part of a roofing system designed to work together.

With the damaged decking repaired, we started building the new Owens Corning Platinum Roofing System in Fairfax Station.

WeatherLock ice and water barrier protects vulnerable areas, while ProArmor synthetic underlayment covers the remaining roof deck before the shingles go down.

Sometimes the most important part of a new roof is what you won't see when we're finished. 👀🔨

Once the old roof came off in Fairfax Station, we could see the condition of the entire deck, and some areas needed attention.

Our crew replaced 11 sheets of damaged plywood and 42 linear feet of deteriorated trim boards around the dormers.

That's why inspecting the exposed structure matters before covering it back up. New shingles need a sound surface beneath them, and deteriorated wood doesn't become less important just because the finished roof will hide it.

A new roof starts with knowing what’s underneath, and around it. 🔎🏠

This Fairfax Station roof was ready for replacement, but our inspection wasn't just about the shingles.

We documented deteriorated trim around a dormer, evaluated flashing and skylight conditions, and identified an opportunity to improve attic airflow with additional intake ventilation over the garage.

Those details matter because a roof is a system. The shingles may be what you see, but decking, flashing, ventilation, and penetrations all have a role in how that roof performs.
