Homeowners ask me all the time if filing a claim for storm damage is going to raise their rates. My answer is always the same - “your rates are going up whether you file the claim or not.”Insurance (for act of god claims IE: Hail, wind, storm etc..) should not raise your rates for that claim specifically… we pay for insurance for these reasons.
This is a quote from this article from State Farm
“Insurance rates are future-focused, accounting for the likelihood and expected cost of covered losses.”
Meaning they are raising rates in our area, regardless of your specific claim, because of the amount of storms we have had and the likelihood of storms in the future.
Homeowners: if you find that you have legitimate storm damage, after an inspection from someone qualified to identify storm damage, your insurance will not raise your rates because you filed a claim on that. THEY ARE RAISING RATES ANYWAY & WE PAY PREMIUMS FOR THIS REASON
- Get your property routinely inspected by someone you trust
- Some damage does not mean a full replacement or that it’s worth filing a claim
- if you believe you have enough storm related damage and insurance covers it, there is nothing wrong with that
