Before blaming the furnace for a chilly room, check what’s covering the airflow path.

A couch over a floor register, a rug covering a vent, or drapes hanging across one can block air from reaching the room.

In a forced-air system, supply registers send heated or cooled air into rooms. Return grilles bring room air back to the system. Both need a clear path—not just the vents where you feel warm air coming out.

Take a look around your rooms, especially where furniture has been rearranged. Check whether furniture, rugs or curtains are covering either type of opening. This is a visual check; there’s no need to open equipment.

Clear openings don’t rule out other causes of uneven heating. If some rooms stay uncomfortable, contact Civive Air Services to request an airflow and system check.

Before you spend money on an air cleaner, make sure your system can move air properly.

A restrictive filter, undersized return, or moisture problem can leave you disappointed with an expensive upgrade. Here’s what the different options in this picture actually do.

🔵 1 INCH PLEATED FILTER
Captures airborne particles and helps keep your equipment clean. The MERV rating tells you how well it captures different particle sizes. A higher rating needs to be matched to what your system can handle.

🔵 4 INCH MEDIA FILTER
The deeper pleats provide more filtering surface area. Properly sized, that can mean better dust capacity and less airflow resistance than a smaller filter with similar efficiency. Thickness alone does not tell the whole story.

🔵 AMERICAN STANDARD ACCUCLEAN
Uses electronic particle collection to capture contaminants from air passing through the system. It needs proper sizing and regular cleaning to keep doing its job.

🔵 UV COIL LIGHT
Helps control microbial growth on coil surfaces the light reaches. It does not collect dust or replace your filter, coil cleaning, or proper drainage.

🔵 RGF HALO LED AND GUARDIAN AIR QR+

That’s why I check return sizing and static pressure, which tells us about the resistance your blower is working against. The recommendation should fit your home and your equipment.

Something you can do today: check your filter and keep return grilles clear. Follow the replacement instructions, but inspect sooner when the system runs heavily or you have pets or renovation dust. A filter doesn’t fill up according to the calendar.

THE EQUIPMENT IS ONLY HALF THE SYSTEM.

When we look at replacing an HVAC system, we don't just walk outside, read the tonnage off the nameplate, and quote another box.

We look at the entire system.

This job is a perfect example.

The outdoor equipment is only one part of what determines how well a building heats and cools. Inside, that air still has to travel through the duct system and actually make it where it is supposed to go.

That's why we inspect the ductwork, routing, connections, transitions, insulation, access, and overall air distribution before recommending new equipment.

You can install a brand new high efficiency system, but if the ductwork cannot properly move and distribute the air, you're still going to have problems.

An AC tune-up should be more than a quick look and a rinse.

This condenser coil had collected leaves, dirt, and debris that restricted airflow and made it harder for the system to release heat. I removed the panels, cleared the buildup, applied coil cleaner, and thoroughly washed the coil.

While servicing the electrical side, I also replaced the contactor. That is the component responsible for sending power to the compressor and outdoor fan whenever the thermostat calls for cooling.

Once everything was cleaned, repaired, and put back together, I connected my Fieldpiece probes and documented the system’s operation, including suction and liquid pressures, superheat, and subcooling.

That is what a real tune-up should look like.

Clean the equipment.
Inspect the electrical components.
Test the system with actual measurements.
Show the customer what was done.
