THE EQUIPMENT IS ONLY HALF THE SYSTEM.

When we look at replacing an HVAC system, we don't just walk outside, read the tonnage off the nameplate, and quote another box.

We look at the entire system.

This job is a perfect example.

The outdoor equipment is only one part of what determines how well a building heats and cools. Inside, that air still has to travel through the duct system and actually make it where it is supposed to go.

That's why we inspect the ductwork, routing, connections, transitions, insulation, access, and overall air distribution before recommending new equipment.

You can install a brand new high efficiency system, but if the ductwork cannot properly move and distribute the air, you're still going to have problems.

An AC tune-up should be more than a quick look and a rinse.

This condenser coil had collected leaves, dirt, and debris that restricted airflow and made it harder for the system to release heat. I removed the panels, cleared the buildup, applied coil cleaner, and thoroughly washed the coil.

While servicing the electrical side, I also replaced the contactor. That is the component responsible for sending power to the compressor and outdoor fan whenever the thermostat calls for cooling.

Once everything was cleaned, repaired, and put back together, I connected my Fieldpiece probes and documented the system’s operation, including suction and liquid pressures, superheat, and subcooling.

That is what a real tune-up should look like.

Clean the equipment.
Inspect the electrical components.
Test the system with actual measurements.
Show the customer what was done.

A CONDENSER FAN MOTOR DOES MORE THAN SPIN A BLADE.

This York rooftop package unit needed a complete condenser fan motor and blade replacement.

The condenser fan assembly has a critical job: moving outdoor air across the condenser coil so the refrigerant can release the heat removed from the building. When that motor becomes weak, overheats, slows down, or stops running, the system can no longer reject heat properly.

That can cause:

• Reduced cooling capacity
• Higher operating pressures
• Increased electrical consumption
• Nuisance safety shutdowns
• Overheated components
• Premature compressor failure

A proper repair requires more than finding a motor that fits the mounting bracket. We matched the replacement motor for the correct voltage, horsepower, RPM, rotation, capacitor requirement, shaft size, and application.

We also installed a new, properly matched condenser fan blade.

After years of operating outdoors, the original blade can become rusted, damaged, or unbalanced from rain, hail, dirt, insects, and normal wear. Old blades also frequently seize onto the motor shaft. Pulling a rusted blade from the old motor can bend or distort it—even when the damage is difficult to see.

Installing that blade on a new motor could create vibration and place continuous stress on the new shaft and bearings. Over time, even a slight imbalance can shorten the life of the replacement motor.

That’s why Civive Air Services replaces the condenser fan blade when we replace the motor. We aren’t putting an old, weathered, potentially unbalanced component onto a brand-new motor.

For this repair, we:

• Removed the original motor and fan assembly
• Inspected the mounting bracket and supports
• Matched the new motor to the equipment
• Installed the correct new capacitor
• Installed a new, properly matched fan blade
• Set the blade at the correct position inside the opening
• Verified rotation, clearance, airflow, and smooth operation

The goal isn’t simply to make the fan spin again.

The goal is to restore proper heat rejection, protect the new motor, reduce stress on the refrigeration system, and help prevent the compressor from becoming the next failure.

That is the difference between replacing a part and completing the repair correctly.

Anybody can connect gauges to an air conditioner.

That does not mean the system has been diagnosed.

On this system, we installed wireless probes at the outdoor unit, temperature and humidity probes in the supply and return air, and static-pressure probes across the indoor equipment.

Once the system stabilized, the refrigerant side showed:

139.9 PSI suction pressure
338.2 PSI liquid pressure
15.4° superheat
11.1° subcooling

But we did not stop at the refrigerant readings.

The return air measured 75.3°, the supply air measured 63.2°, and the system had a 12.1° temperature split. Return-air humidity was 71.1%, showing that the equipment was also dealing with a heavy moisture load.

We then measured total external static pressure at 0.57 inches of water column. That reading tells us how much resistance the blower is working against through the filter, coil, ductwork, registers, and return system.

Every one of these measurements affects the others.

Restricted airflow can change refrigerant pressures. High indoor humidity can reduce the sensible temperature split. A dirty coil, incorrect blower speed, restrictive filter, or undersized ductwork can make a refrigerant problem appear different than it really is.

That is why adding refrigerant based on pressure alone can create another problem instead of correcting the original one.

At Civive Air Services, a diagnostic is not a quick glance at the gauges. We let the equipment operate, gather real measurements, compare the refrigerant side to the air side, and follow the evidence before recommending repairs.

The whole system tells the truth when you know how to read it.

Two identical 10 µF capacitors. Two completely different test results.

While working through this York package unit, I isolated both condenser fan capacitors and tested them directly with my Fieldpiece meter.

The first capacitor tested at 9.78 µF. With an acceptable range of 9.50 to 10.50 µF, it was still within specification.

The second capacitor tested at only 8.92 µF. That one was below the manufacturer’s allowable range and no longer providing its rated capacitance.

You cannot diagnose that by appearance. Both capacitors looked normal from the outside. The weakness only showed up when they were disconnected and properly tested.

Because this unit is receiving planned equipment repairs, I replaced both original capacitors with properly matched 10 µF Titan Pro capacitors. That gives the equipment known good electrical components instead of leaving an aging capacitor behind and hoping it holds up.

This is how we approach HVAC service at Civive Air Services. Test the component. Compare it to the manufacturer’s rating. Document the actual reading. Then replace what the measurements prove needs attention.

That is the difference between guessing at parts and performing a professional diagnosis.

Anybody can hook gauges to an air conditioner.

The real question is: do they know what the numbers are telling them?

This is what a real HVAC diagnostic looks like.

On this R-22 system, we didn't just check whether the air felt cold. We measured BOTH sides of the system: refrigerant performance and actual airflow conditions.

Our readings showed:

• 80.9 PSI suction pressure
• 375.3 PSI head pressure
• 0.2°F superheat
• 3.6°F subcooling
• 82.1°F return air
• 69.3°F supply air
• Only a 12.8°F temperature split

Those numbers get our attention.

But here's where experience matters:

YOU DON'T DIAGNOSE AN HVAC SYSTEM FROM ONE NUMBER.

Airflow problems, dirty coils, refrigerant charge, metering devices, outdoor conditions and the overall condition of the equipment all affect what we're seeing.

Simply adding refrigerant because a pressure "looks low" isn't diagnosing anything. In fact, it can make the problem worse.

⚠️ A failed compressor doesn’t automatically mean you need a whole new system.
This older system suffered a compressor failure. A lot of homeowners hear the word “compressor” and immediately think they have no choice but to replace the entire AC.
Not always.
The right answer starts with a real diagnosis. We look at the condition of the entire system, determine why the compressor failed, and then give you honest options based on the equipment, repair cost, and expected life of the system.
On this job, repairing the existing equipment made sense for the customer. The failed compressor was removed, the refrigeration circuit was properly serviced, a new filter drier and compressor were installed, and the system was evacuated, charged, tested, and put back into operation.
Here’s the important part: replacing a compressor is more than swapping out a black can and adding refrigerant. If the underlying cause of the failure isn’t addressed and the refrigeration system isn’t properly prepared, that expensive new compressor can fail too.
That’s why we diagnose first and sell second.
