Iowa primarily uses cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and fescues, which thrive in the state's climate of cold winters and warm summers.

As the days begin to get colder cool-season grasses slow down and go dormant in cold winters, turning brown as they conserve energy in their roots. Their growth is fastest in the cooler temperatures of fall and spring when photosynthesis is more efficient, typically between 60-75° degrees Fahrenheit.

When temperatures consistently drop below 41° degrees Fahrenheit, photosynthesis stops, and the grass relies on stored energy to survive until warmer weather returns.

Harvest season is here! We love fall and all the beautiful colors. A Pro Tip: if you enjoy pumpkins in your yard, consider washing them down well with 50/50 water and white vinegar. This will kill any bacteria growing on the exterior of your pumpkin and greatly reduce its from rotting in a few weeks. Additionally, place the pumpkin off the ground using wood, plastic container or small tote. This will increase the airflow under the pumpkin and help to further reduce it from rotting on the bottom. The vinegar will also keep away birds, insects and squirrels from enjoying a gourd or two.

We recently cut down a small walnut tree. So we took some of the logs and made a few different sized walnut pumpkins discs (to keep the look of nature) and help keep pumpkins off the ground.

Today was a beautiful fall day to do some trailer maintenance. Our trailer compartment box lid hinge was rusted and broken. So we removed the lid, cut off the old hinge and replaced with all new hardware and a fresh coat of paint.

Today we assisted our Aunt Laurie do some work in her beautiful flower garden. We removed some old edging pavers, laid and raked in some new top soil, edged her sidewalks and removed some old plants to make way for new plants in the spring. She is having cement border edging completed at the end of the month and new w**d barrier and mulch this spring.

Our “roots” run deep for working outdoors. We began at a young age while helping rake grass into piles at home and loading the grass into our wagon. In this 2016 throwback video, Noah (7) and Garrett (12) we begin to see some of the important fundamentals of TEAMWORK beginning to take shape. (NOTE: Keep your eye on who grabs the bigger bundles of grass clippings.)
