What is a Load Shed Module and Why Do You Need One for Your Generator?

When selecting a home generator, you'll encounter various installation options. One of the most critical components is the load shed module. But what exactly does it do, and why is it essential for protecting both your home and your generator?

A load shed module is a device that connects your home and your standby generator to prevent overloading. It works by managing your electrical demands in tiers and creating a prioritized circuit list for your home’s essential needs during an emergency. If too much power is drawn, the module shuts off the lowest priority circuits to protect the generator, ensuring that essential systems remain operational. Even whole-home generators can be overwhelmed if too many devices run simultaneously.

While some companies might suggest that a load shed module isn't necessary, this is inaccurate. The National Electrical Code (NEC) Article 701.4 requires that backup power systems handle the connected load adequately. It also mandates an automatic load-shedding system to ensure critical circuits receive sufficient power during an outage.
