The more we’ve learned about how nutritious sprouts are, the more my wife and I have wanted to incorporate them into our diet. They’re available at many grocery stores, but I’ve learned that the fresher the better, and they do go bad quickly.

After a busy year of personal challenges and work, my wife finally got the materials needed to start sprouting at home and got to work that day.

Our son, who turns three in a couple weeks, helped my wife scoop seeds into the sprouting jar. He’s familiar with sprouts due to one of his favorite snacks, FoodNerd Mega Puffs, and the couple times we purchased sprouts from the store, but this would be his first time seeing them transform from seed to sprout.

Even with years of experience caring for plants, we were still apprehensive to trying something new. If sprouts are not kept clean and sanitary while growing, there is a risk of a bacterial breakout, but we followed the directions to safely grow the sprouts and five days later, we had a jar full of nutrient-dense plant matter.

Since then, we’ve harvested two batches of sprouts and have batch #3 in the works. They’ve been a delicious addition to sandwiches, crackers with avocados, and even as side salads. We’re energized by how easy the growing process is because it means we can grow some nutrient-dense food inside with few resources or time invested.

I know these will enrich my diet, but I’ve been especially happy to see my son eat sandwiches and crackers with sprouts, and crunch on ā€œthe purple onesā€ (radish seeds).

I’m reminded that life is made of the little things we do to enrich our everyday lived experience. Watching things grow and nourishing our bodies is foundational to joy and well-being, and a wonderful thing about sprouts is that they don’t need a lot of space, resources, or money.

If you think you don’t have a green thumb but want to grow food, sprouts might be your next project.

Have you ever grown or eaten sprouts? If so, what's your favorite?
