Fireplace Remodel: Welcome to the Ugly Phase 🔥

Every beautiful fireplace has to go through an ugly phase first. 😄

The new fireplace is installed, and now we’re preparing the surround for its new stone finish.

We start by applying a smooth, even scratch coat over the prepared substrate. Then we intentionally make it ugly—scratching deep grooves into the surface to create plenty of texture for the mortar and new stone to grab onto during installation.

It’s one of those steps that will never be seen once the fireplace is finished, but getting the details right underneath the finished materials is just as important as what you see at the end.

Custom Stone Fireplace Taking Shape 🔥

This new fireplace is really starting to take shape.

We’re installing Fond du Lac Glenwood natural stone around a new Nordik 36 direct-vent gas fireplace, and the character of this stone is already transforming the room. 🪨

One of the things we love about working with natural stone is that every piece is different. Before installation, we lay out and sort through the stone to balance sizes, shapes, textures and colors as the fireplace comes together.

Once the stonework is complete, we’ll be finishing the joints with a medium gray grout, which should provide just enough contrast while keeping the overall look natural and timeless.

There’s still plenty happening above the fireplace, but this gives a pretty good preview of where we’re headed.

Fireplace Remodel Underway 🔥

Another fireplace remodel is underway in West Michigan.

We’ve already:
• Removed the old stone surround
• Disconnected the gas and electrical
• Removed the old, broken fireplace
• Modified the framing for the new unit

Next up is installation of the new fireplace, followed by a completely new custom finish. Natural stone and tile are both being considered, with final selections still being made.

This is the stage where the transformation really starts to take shape. Stay tuned for the finished product.

Building a Fireplace From the Ground Up 🔥

This one isn’t a fireplace remodel—we’re creating an entirely new fireplace from the ground up.

The new structure is framed and beginning to take shape, extending up into the vaulted ceiling and creating a new focal point for this living space.

There’s a lot that happens before the finished materials ever go on: layout, proportions, framing, fireplace installation, mechanicals, substrate, and all the details that ultimately make the finished fireplace look like it was always meant to be there.

Next up, we’ll keep building this one out and start bringing the finished design to life. 🔥🏡

Quite the transformation on this one.

We took this traditional brick fireplace and completely reworked it into a natural stone focal point built around a new remote-controlled Kozy Heat Nordic 41 gas fireplace.

The new finish features Halquist Grey/Buff natural stone, paired with Aura Blue Ice limestone for the hearth and mantel. Rather than using standard finished slabs, we custom cut the limestone and hand-chiseled the exposed edges to create the natural “rocked” finish you see in the final product. 🪨🔨

New fireplace. Natural stone. Custom-fabricated hearth and mantel. And a completely different feel for the room.

The finished project matters. So does everything that happens along the way. 🏡🔨

Before the tools come out, we take the time to protect the areas around our work. Floors, walls, furniture, walkways and adjoining spaces are covered and isolated as needed before demolition or construction begins.

This time lapse shows our crew setting up protection before starting another remodel.

It might not be the most exciting part of a transformation, but it’s an important one. Our clients are trusting us inside their homes, and we want them to be just as happy with how we treated their space as they are with the finished project.

Good remodeling is about more than the final photos. It’s about the entire experience.

Every fireplace remodel starts by looking beyond what’s already there.

This older brick veneer fireplace had served its purpose for years, but it was time for a fresh start. After careful demolition, we’re reshaping the entire fireplace to create a new focal point that better fits the home and the family’s vision.

There’s still a lot to come, but the foundation is in place:
✔️ Original brick removed
✔️ New framing underway
✔️ Fireplace opening reconfigured
✔️ Ready for the next stage of the transformation

The best part? We’re just getting started.

🪨 Every custom fireplace has details most homeowners never get to see.

For this project, we hand-cut and chiseled the edge of a Blue Ice limestone mantel to create a natural rock face that complements the stone fireplace. There’s no shortcut or machine that can perfectly replicate the character of natural stone—it’s shaped one piece at a time.

These are the kinds of details that often go unnoticed when a project is finished, but they’re what give a fireplace its authentic, custom-built look.

It’s craftsmanship like this that turns quality materials into something truly unique.

What began as an outdated fireplace has been completely transformed into a warm, timeless centerpiece for this home.

This project included:

There’s something exciting about seeing natural stone start to transform a fireplace.

This project is being finished with Fond du Lac Country Stone, a natural limestone veneer known for its rugged texture, warm gray and buff tones, and timeless character. Every piece is unique, creating depth and variation that simply can’t be replicated with manufactured products.

We’re taking our time to carefully shape each corner, balance the stone pattern, and create a fireplace that looks like it’s has always belonged in the home.

It’s still a work in progress, but it’s starting to come to life—and we can’t wait to share the finished result.
