This homeowner didn’t know what questions to ask before making their selections.

The cabinets were beautiful and expensive, but VOC concerns became a problem after they were already installed. The homeowner was experiencing burning eyes in the kitchen, and simply replacing the cabinetry wasn’t a realistic solution.

So instead of starting over, we worked alongside the contractor to find another path.

The room was contained, heated, ventilated, and monitored as part of a VOC bakeout designed to accelerate off-gassing and exhaust those emissions outside the home.

The best time to ask questions about the materials going into your home is before they’re installed.

That’s where Healthy Home Consulting can make a difference.

Building or remodeling? David can help you evaluate materials, ask better questions, communicate with your contractors, and navigate decisions before they become expensive problems.

This kitchen looked beautiful, but the client couldn’t comfortably spend time in it without their eyes burning.

So what do you do when the problem may be coming from the materials themselves?

Instead of tearing out the cabinets, this room was contained and a VOC bakeout was performed using controlled heat, ventilation, and monitoring to help accelerate off-gassing from materials in the space.

That is the part of healthy home work most people never see.

It is not always about replacing everything. Sometimes it is about understanding what is happening inside the home, measuring it, and choosing the right process to address it.

Remodeling, remediating, or building new? David helps homeowners evaluate materials, ask better questions, and navigate the project with a healthier home as the goal.

Your flooring needs time to acclimate. But did you know some wall board may need it too?

On this project, we used magnesium oxide (MGO) board and allowed it to acclimate for 48 to 72 hours before installation.

Why does that matter?

If the material goes up while holding excess moisture and then the home’s AC begins pulling that moisture out, the board can shrink, potentially leaving you with cracks in a wall you just finished.

It’s another example of why the details before installation matter just as much as the finished product.

Building or remodeling? Ask your contractor how the materials going into your home need to be stored and acclimated before installation.

Would you have known to ask this? I work with homeowners and contractors around the country as they aim to build healthier homes and need guidance along the way.

Your “healthy home” can fail right here.

You can choose mold-resistant wallboard and no-VOC paint, but what goes between them matters, too.

Standard drywall mud can introduce additional dust, chemicals and VOCs into the home. That’s why a truly healthy build requires attention to every layer, including the joint compound used before the walls are painted.

Healthy homes aren’t created by one “green” product. They’re created through hundreds of intentional material choices working together.

Before your walls are finished, ask your builder:

“What drywall mud are we using and why?”

Would you have thought to ask this question?

If your builder wants to put drywall, green board, or purple board behind your shower tile, it’s worth asking more questions.

Tile and grout aren’t the waterproofing system, and the materials behind them matter.

On this particular shower, DensGlass® was installed behind the tile as part of the assembly. It’s a Georgia-Pacific product designed with moisture resistance in mind and is one of the details David looks at when evaluating how a shower is being built.

The bigger takeaway: don’t wait until your shower fails to start asking how it was built.

If you’re remodeling, remediating, or building new, David can help you evaluate materials, ask the right questions, communicate with your contractor, and navigate the project with a healthier home as the goal.

Are you using large tiles or full slabs in your shower?

Reducing grout lines isn’t just about creating a cleaner look. It also means fewer joints and transitions to maintain over time.

For shower curbs and bench tops, consider using solid pieces instead of creating multiple grout lines across these critical surfaces.

And don’t forget the pitch.

Curbs and bench tops should be slightly angled toward the drain so water moves back into the shower instead of sitting where you don’t want it.

Fewer grout lines. Thoughtful material choices. Proper drainage.

These are small decisions during construction that can help prevent bigger problems later.

Need help making sure your contractor is thinking through details like these?

Safe Haven offers Healthy Home Consulting for both homeowners and trades. We can help with contractor selection, material decisions, project planning, and guidance throughout the process.

The goal: get it right the first time.

You notice a smell in your home that just won’t go away. What is it actually telling you?

In this home, we were looking at VOCs years after materials were originally installed.

But that’s why looking at the whole home matters. A strange odor may point toward an indoor air quality issue. Split or separating wood can raise questions about humidity control. Different clues can point to completely different problems.

The goal isn’t to guess. It’s to understand what’s happening inside the home, measure what can be measured, and know where to look next.

A healthy home is more than what you can see.

A 1901 historic home in Franklin. Beautiful craftsmanship. Hidden mold.

The family living there began experiencing health issues. What they discovered inside the walls changed everything.

David recently shared this case during an Educational Panel hosted by The Healthy Home Network. The focus was simple. Mold remediation should never be about the lowest price. It should be about lowering the risk of it coming back.

From restoring historic homes in Franklin to advising builders on healthier construction practices and offering preventative maintenance plans, our mission is clear. Protect the home. Protect the family.
