Sitting low and unassuming within the landscape, this midcentury inspired home takes in 180 degree views of the Pend Oreille River and Selkirk Mountains.

Native basalt stone and whitewashed cedar, sourced within a few miles of the site, give the exterior a timeless feel. Above, a butterfly roof sits over a near continuous band of clerestory windows, filling the core of the home with natural light and eliminating the need for interior lighting during the day.

During the Old Trail fires, our clients lost their midcentury home. Along with the house, the original plans were gone too, and with them, much of the record of what made the home so special.

When they reached out to HDG, we realized we already knew this house. Years ago, the previous owner hired us for a renovation, and as part of that work we had scanned the original plans and updated them to modern systems. Those drawings were still safe in our files.

We’re honored to be part of what comes next. Alongside Stroom Interiors, we’re working with our clients to rebuild their home with the same midcentury character it always had, while making space for the way they want to live in it now.

From a dream land purchase on Riverside to a temporary detour during the pandemic, the journey continues. HDG Founder Joshua Hissong contemplates building on one of the last infill lots across from the MAC in Downtown Spokane.

As a testament to the church’s original quaint design, we worked with the Garden team to modernize moments of the space while still honoring its original purpose. With the goal of creating more room for the congregation, our team opened up the space while maintaining its charm.

Designed by McClure & Adkison, Moritz Kundig, and sculptor Harold Balazs, this Midcentury landmark plays with curves, geometry, and tactile concrete. A collaboration that prioritized emotion over intellect, and it shows.
