Is this DIY belt grinder worth twice the price of a Harbor Freight belt sander? If you square stock, clean up bandsaw cuts, or do any heavy metal removal, these side-by-side tests might settle it for you.

Belt sander Vs Belt grinder: which one removes more material?

We put a $325 belt sander up against a $1,000 DIY go-kart belt grinder in the Fireball 1/2” rod test, which measures how much material each machine can remove in one minute of continuous grinding. The belt sander is running on a 24-grit belt with 1 horsepower, while the DIY go-kart grinder is running on a 36-grit belt with 5 horsepower. The belt sander removed only 2 inches of rod. The Fireball DIY go-kart belt grinder removed over 10 inches, and that’s with a finer grit and a worn belt. Speed and horsepower make the difference.

Can this diy go-kart belt grinder really hog metal? 

This is part 17 of making this DIY go-kart belt grinder. Today we’ll be testing how fast this grinder can hog away metal. On a 3M 60-grit belt, it cut like butter and ran smooth. Then came the timed rod test: one minute of grinding 1/2” mild steel on a used 36-grit Norton Blaze. My big 5 HP Go Kart grinder does about 10 1/4”, so anything in the 6–8” range would be a win on this budget. The result? Over 6” chomped off in 1 minute, with chips coming off in long strings. And that was even with my table casters unlocked. It’s compact, and it still feels like my big grinder. It took about 8 hours to build for under $1000.

Can this go-kart belt grinder run on a flat tire?

Now that the grinder works, let’s run some operating tests! First, the vibration check.The go kart wheels aren’t perfect, but vibration is minimal. Remember the flexure? A little turn of the wrench tracks the belt left or right, then it locks down easily. I drained a tire completely flat to test how it would run, and nothing happened. Centrifugal force balloons it back up, and my big grinder runs with no air at all for a smoother, cushioned ride. Next up, how much material can this thing remove?

Will this belt grinder work for under $1000?

It tracked perfectly on the first try, but the motor jumped. With no soft start, it hits full RPM instantly and the wheel walks up the belt. The fix is a light-duty shock mounted to the ball pivots I installed earlier. It dampens the startup jolt, and now it’s much better. A little jump is still expected. Tomorrow I’m testing the tracking system by letting the air out of the tires, just to see what happens.

How do you dial in a belt grinder? 

This is part 14 of making a DIY go-kart belt grinder. Today,  we’re assembling the platen. The platen’s three bolts work like a gimbal to tilt and shift it. I set it just barely touching the belt, since a 1/16” gap is fine, but it should never add tension. Six heavy tacks will hold the work rest bracket without warping the plate. After a coat of Regal Red, adding a shift k**b like the original, and a quick tracking adjustment, the work rest is on and square! Tomorrow I’m flipping the switch for the very first time. Let’s see if all that work paid off.

Why use go-kart wheels on a belt grinder?

Welcome back to part 13 of building this awesome DIY go-kart belt grinder. Today, we’re going to focus on the wheels and belt. These wheels used to be the small front wheels of a go-kart I snagged at a swap meet. That’s where the go-kart grinder gets its name. A collar sleeve snugged up the lower wheel’s fit, and a 1/2” spacer lined up the top wheel. Then the 4” x 60” belt went on. Pull the shifter lifter, slip it on, and let go, so the motor’s weight tensions the belt. Here is my favorite safety feature. If the belt breaks, the motor drops about an inch and free-spins. There’s nothing for the wheel to grab, so there’s no wild, crazy spiral.
