My neighbor had a new cedar deck installed. Cedar, is a handsome wood. Insect resistant, mold and rot resistant. The stain really brought out the richness of the raw cedar. New Cedar will quickly turn into an ugly grey if not treated/stained because the tannins will bleed out.
I used a PPG product, oil based, and it comes pre-tinted in a variety of hues. Some before and after pics.

A few before and after's from a house I previously posted explaining about prep. Just wanted to show the finished product.
The customer jokingly called it her "Christmas House" because of the color scheme. There's no question its very striking. A real attention grabber! Just need a few Holly's in front with some red berries to give it some symmetry!

One of the things I love about my work is that it affords me the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life. With that in mind, I would like to introduce you to Ann.

Ann is a venerable, hardy, 94-year-old from Montana who remembers the Great Depression and WWII. She taught English on the Blackfoot reservation for 30 years and is incredibly kind, caring, and sharp as a tack. She still drives her own car and lives in a cozy 1903 home. Her place feels very grandmotherly! The other day, when she realized one of our crew members hadn't brought a lunch, she immediately stepped in and made him a grilled cheese sandwich. Ann does not own a microwave.

Much like my 96-year-old father, Ann is a living treasure and a wonderful source of oral history. I truly believe our elders should be sought out by historians and interviewed.

A few years ago we painted a home for a nice young couple and their two daughters around 7 and 9 years old at the time. The girls chalked this sweet message for us in their driveway. I honestly have to say they are one of the kindest families we've ever had the pleasure of working with. Their house was in a cul de sac in a residential neighborhood in NW Spokane. It was heartbreaking to learn their home was burned in the fire as well as the entire neighborhood. We are happy to report that Marie and her lovely family are safe and well but we are sad to report their home is gone.
Where there is life, there is hope.
We are keeping Marie, and her family as well all the victims of the wildfires in our thoughts and prayers.

A few more words about proper prep. Like many of the well-aged homes in the South Hill neighborhood of Spokane, this one was overdue for some fresh paint. After much hard work scraping and sanding, we applied primer onto the exposed areas of cedar. Priming cedar requires an oil based primer to prevent tannin bleed. Meaning the tannins (think that chalky taste you get from red w**e or black tea) from the cedar could bleed through the primer and even bleed through to the top-coat with an ugly brownish stain, unless the proper primer is used to prevent it.

Painting a home is more than just about Aesthetics. It is also about weatherproofing a home from the elements. A customer had a small trim piece that acted as a ledge on his 1950's home. Perfect place for water to collect and sun damage to occur. The trim piece had separated from the siding over the years but the customer was unaware of this. Out of sight, out of mind.
While some companies would haver simply neglected this area or cut corners,
as part of the prep, I used a foam backer rod to fill the gap and filled it with caulk before sanding, priming and painting. At Dan D Painting we approach every job as if I were painting my own house!

Admittedly this customer's deck has seen better days. With a little prep, some love, and a fresh coat of Superdeck (water based stain) from Sherwin-Williams, we gave it a new life!

Homeowners and inexperienced painters will often use the incorrect product for a given substrate. Metal doors for example. This customer chose a splash of color for both the garage and front door. I used a DTM (Direct To Metal) product which is specifically designed to adhere to metal for long term durability and color retention. Dan D Painting uses this product on all our metal doors
