You may have heard in the news that Oak Wilt has made its way into the Rochester area. But what exactly is it and what should you look for?

To start, Oak Wilt is a deadly, contagious fungal disease that has made its way into Upstate NY and surrounding areas, posing a threat to our local oak trees—especially Red Oaks.

What to look for:

That massive, lumpy growth at the base of the tree is called a burl.

A burl is a tree's version of a benign tumor or an exaggerated healing response. It happens when the tree's normal growth hormones get disrupted, causing cells to divide rapidly and uncontrollably into a dense mass rather than forming normal straight wood and bark. They're typically caused by fungal infections, environmental stress, insects, or general injury to the tree.
