ArchitexOne "All fine architectural values are human values, else not valuable" - FLW ArchitexOne designs, builds and renovates home.

Our Collaborative approach to architecture and construction provides homeowners with a single contact to assure clear communication through the process of design and building. We believe the strongest teams are rooted in mutual respect: respect for the needs and aspiration of each homeowner and respect for the dedication and passion of each team member. Every project receives our focused attention to quality, detail, value and time. Each of our project teams has a Project Architect who focuses on the creative aspect of the design, and a Project Manager who oversees budget, schedule and construction. We organize our projects so that we are able to provide fair estimates at milestones within the design process. Through the design phase, the Project Architect offers options in sketch format. Later, perspective sketches, computer models, computer-drafted drawings, and the review of actual building-material samples help the owners through the myriad of choices they will need to make. The Project Manager plays an active role through the design process consulting on construction practices and techniques and keeping the project in line with the budget. The Project manager also acts as another observer at the table to assure that the client’s ideas are heard. Once Design is complete, the Project Manager becomes the primary contact for the Owner, and prepares the Construction Budget, which, if there has been no change in the project scope, is in alignment with the preliminary budgets. Whether working with our in-house architects or with a client’s architect, our Project managers provide a regular check on the design process. Because our approach keeps open the lines of communication between the owners, the Architect and the builder, we are able to mitigate the stresses to the owner through what can seem a disruptive and chaotic process.

If you're hoping to break ground next spring, now is the time to start design. Drawings, engineering, zoning and permits in most Connecticut towns take months, not weeks. Starting this fall puts you first in line when contractors' spring schedules fill up. Let's talk about your project: architexone.com/contact

Building a home usually means juggling a designer, a builder and a dozen decisions in between. Our approach is simpler: one team that understands both design and construction and is accountable for how they fit together, from the first sketch to the day you get the keys. That's what "Designed, built." means to us.

Before hiring an architect, ask: Have you designed homes in this town before? How do you handle budget during design? How involved are you once construction starts? Who's my point of contact from start to finish? The answers tell you a lot about how your project will go.

A good addition looks like it was always there. That means matching roof pitches, aligning floor heights, carrying the trim details through, and planning the structure and mechanicals so the new space works with the old. If you're outgrowing your home but love where you live, an addition may be the answer. We design them to feel original, not attached.

On a typical custom home, the foundation, framing and mechanical systems take the biggest share of the budget, not the finishes people spend the most time choosing. Smart design decisions about the shape of the house, roof lines and spans often save more than any countertop downgrade. Good design is cost control.

The best time to call an architect is before you buy the lot. Slope, ledge, wetlands setbacks, septic suitability and driveway access can add tens of thousands to a build, or rule out the house you're picturing. A one-hour site walk before you sign can save you from an expensive surprise. Thinking about land in Hartford County? Let's look at it together.

Most new-home budgets aren't blown by one big decision. They're lost to a dozen small surprises once construction starts: a beam that won't work, ledge nobody planned for, change orders that add up. At ArchitexOne we're architects first, with years on actual job sites, so we design homes that can be built efficiently and make cost decisions early, when changes cost nothing but a revised sketch.

We almost skipped the architect for our kitchen remodel to save a few thousand dollars. Then we found out the wall we wanted to remove was load-bearing. That one decision would have cost us triple to fix later.

Architects aren't just for fancy additions. They make sure your plans are safe and legal before anyone picks up a hammer. Contractors are essential for the build, but they're not designers. Knowing who leads when can save you a lot of stress and money.

What's been your experience with renovation projects? Did you hire an architect first or a contractor?

I was talking to a friend who's building a custom home and he mentioned his budget was already 15% over, and they hadn't even poured the foundation yet. His estimate was based on old drawings and a guess about soil conditions.

That's when I remembered a 2026 guide I'd read. It said most overruns start with a vague scope and a guess about site conditions. You need a written scope, a current site survey, and a clear list of exclusions before you estimate anything.

The guide also had a clever trick for optimism bias: estimate the project normally, then estimate it again as if you were a contractor bidding against a rival. The gap between those numbers is your bias adjustment. If your first pass was $180k and your defensive pass was $205k, that $25k is the cost of being honest about uncertainty.

And for contingency, simple interior remodels typically need 10-15%, additions with new foundations 15-20%, and custom homes on raw land 20%+.

What's the biggest surprise cost you've hit on a construction project?
