We pulled out the 1997 Outer Banks Home Builders Association Parade of Homes Planbook and found Mark Martins entry for the home he and Sandy Martin had just built for their family—one of Sandmark’s earliest opportunities to show the Outer Banks what this new company was all about.

The house and lot were listed at $395,000, the Sandmark phone number was the same one we still use today, and somehow, after all these years, Mark still has the mustache too.

But one detail stood out to us most. The original ad ended with:
“Let Sandmark Construction make it possible for you to leave your mark in the sand.”

Almost 30 years later, that feels pretty fitting.

A lot has changed since this first Parade entry, but the commitment to building quality homes and lasting relationships on the Outer Banks hasn’t.

30 years later, we’re proud to still be leaving our mark in the sand.

This wasn't just our first home. It was our first portfolio. 🏠

Every finish. Every detail. Every late night.

Every decision was made knowing this house had 1 job - to show people what Sandmark could do... Ok, 2 jobs - raise 2 beach babies.

A year later, we entered it into the Parade of Homes.

We lost by one vote. (To an oceanfront house...which, honestly, felt like pretty good company.

But here's the funny part...

That home brought us our first three remodeling clients!

Looking back, we'd take those three clients over a trophy any day.

We didn't really believe in "work-life balance." We believed in bringing life to work.

Some afternoons looked like choosing paint colors. Some looked like homework at the job site. Some looked like unloading tools in the red truck before school.

Looking back, we wouldn't change a thing.

As we celebrate Sandmark's 30th anniversary, we're looking back at some of the homeowners who have been part of our journey along the way.

This featured testimonial comes from one of Mark Martin's early custom home projects in McLean, Virginia—when Sandmark was just a dream and before our family made the move to the Outer Banks. These experiences helped shape the values and craftsmanship that Sandmark was built on.

Just a brochure, a phone number, and a whole lot of determination. Some things have changed over the last 3 decades, but our commitment hasn’t.

Thirty years ago, we packed up everything we owned, left our families behind, and moved four hours away to a place we hoped would become home.

We didn't have a long client list, or one at all.
We didn't have employees.
We didn't even have a house yet.

We had two young kids, a dream, and a belief that if we built homes the right way, everything else would follow.

Looking back...we're really glad we took the chance.

This month begins a walk down memory lane as Sandmark celebrates 30 years.
