A 4-inch cabinet door sample tells you the color and the finish. It doesn't tell you how that color reads across a full run of upper and lower cabinets. A basement finishing project in a home built in 2010 and one in a home built in 1965 are different projects — even when the finished square footage and general scope look the same on paper.

The older home carries variables the newer one typically doesn't: foundation type, moisture history, older electrical, ceiling height constraints, and sometimes prior finished work that has to be assessed or removed.

Marble is the tile that makes a bathroom look the most finished — and the one that shows every flaw in the substrate underneath it. This 80 sq ft bathroom used marble two ways: subway tile on the tub and shower walls, floor to ceiling, and a herringbone pattern on the floor.

Herringbone doesn't forgive an uneven floor. Every tile has to land at exactly the same height as the one next to it, so any hump or dip in the subfloor shows up instantly once the pattern is down. We checked the floor carefully after demo, before any tile was installed — that's the step that decides whether herringbone looks like herringbone or like a rough attempt at it.

Here's the full scope:

✅ Full demo, new bathtub and faucet
✅ Waterproofing in the tub and shower area
✅ Marble subway tile, floor to ceiling, on tub/shower walls
✅ Herringbone marble floor with marble thresholds
✅ Custom recessed niche built into the tile
✅ New vanity lighting and electrical outlets
✅ Original window trim restored — sanded and repainted instead of replaced

Taking the tile all the way to the ceiling also does something practical: it removes the line where tile meets painted drywall above a shower, which is one of the most common spots for moisture to work behind the wall over time.

Just wrapped up this shower rebuild in Elkins Park, PA — and this one's a good example of a project that didn't need to be a full bathroom gut. 🙌

The vanity, toilet, and flooring in this bathroom were all still working fine. The shower was the actual problem — so instead of tearing out a bathroom that mostly worked, we rebuilt just the shower, the right way.

Here's what that actually involved:

✅ Full demo — pan, wall tile, curb, all removed
✅ New liner, mortar bed, and drain — waterproofed from the framing out
✅ Flood test before any tile was installed
✅ Shower valve relocated to the opposite wall
✅ Wall tile to the ceiling, stacked layout, mosaic tile on the floor
✔ Recessed niche built in for storage
✅ New curb and tile dimensions set so the existing glass door could go back in

The flood test is worth calling out specifically — it's the step that proves the waterproofing works before it gets covered by tile. Skip it, and you don't find out there's a problem until there's water damage behind the wall.
