📹 How Long Should You Keep Your Security Camera Recordings?

Most people don't think about video storage until they need to look back at something that happened days or even weeks ago.

And that's when they realize the footage is already gone.

So, how much recording history do you actually need?

For most homes, 7–14 days might be enough. But for businesses, we usually recommend considering at least 30 days. Some commercial properties may need 60–90 days or more, depending on their operations.

A few things affect how long your recordings are saved:

• How many cameras you have
• Your video quality and resolution
• Whether your cameras record 24/7 or only when motion is detected
• The amount of storage available

One thing many people don't realize is that most recording systems automatically overwrite older footage when storage fills up.

Having security cameras is great, but having the footage available when you actually need it is what matters.

At HTO Systems Inc., we help homeowners and businesses set up surveillance systems with the right storage and recording settings for their needs.

Too Many Security Alerts Can Make You Less Secure 🚨

More alerts don't always mean better security.

When your security system sends too many false or unnecessary notifications, it's easy to start ignoring them — including the ones that matter.

A smarter security system should:

Minimize false alarms

Prioritize important events

Deliver timely, actionable alerts

At HTO Systems, we believe effective security isn't about more notifications. It's about knowing when something truly needs your attention.

🔒 Smarter alerts. Better security.

Can Your Security Camera Be Hacked?

The short answer is: yes. Like any network-connected device, a security camera can be vulnerable if it isn’t properly configured, maintained, and protected.

Modern security cameras do much more than record video. Many are connected to your network, provide remote access, and communicate with other devices and services — which means cybersecurity should be part of your overall security strategy.

What can put a camera system at risk?

🔹 Weak or reused passwords — Poor password practices can make unauthorized access easier.

🔹 Outdated firmware — Keeping cameras, recorders, and related software up to date helps address known security vulnerabilities.

🔹 Poor network configuration — Cameras are part of your network, and improper network configuration can create unnecessary exposure.

🔹 Unsecured remote access — Remote viewing is convenient, but it should be configured using appropriate security controls.

🔹 Lack of multi-factor authentication — When supported, MFA can provide an additional layer of protection for accounts and remote access.

🔹 Outdated or unsupported equipment — Older devices that no longer receive security updates may present additional long-term risks.

Physical Security and Cybersecurity Go Hand in Hand

A professional security system is about more than choosing the right cameras. It also means considering how devices are connected, who has access to them, how credentials are managed, and how the system is maintained over time.

At HTO Systems, we take a complete approach to security — considering both the physical equipment and the network infrastructure behind it.

Because your security system should help protect your property without creating unnecessary vulnerabilities.

$200 Camera vs. a Professional Security System — What’s the Difference?

A $200 camera can show you what happened.

A professionally designed security system is built to help you protect your property before, during, and after an incident.

A basic consumer camera may be enough for checking your front door or keeping an eye on your home. But when security really matters, there’s much more to consider:

🔹 Professional camera placement — reducing blind spots and capturing the areas that actually matter.
🔹 Reliable recording — properly configured storage and continuous access to important footage.
🔹 Better image quality — especially at night and in challenging lighting conditions.
🔹 System integration — cameras can work together with intrusion alarms, access control, intercoms, and other security systems.
🔹 Professional installation & configuration — equipment is selected and configured specifically for your property.
🔹 Ongoing support — when something stops working, you have someone to call.

The difference isn’t simply the price of the camera.

It’s the difference between buying a device and having a security system designed around your property.

Whether you need security for your home or business, HTO Systems can help you choose the right solution.

Access Control: More Than Just Opening a Door

When people think about access control, they often think of one simple function: unlocking a door with a card, key fob, or mobile credential.

But a properly designed access control system can do much more than replace a traditional key.

It gives businesses and property managers greater control over who can enter, where they can go, and when they have access.

For example, access can be managed based on the needs of the property:

• Employees can have access only to the areas they need
• Certain doors can be restricted to authorized personnel
• Access can be limited to specific days or hours
• Credentials can be added, changed, or removed when employees, tenants, or vendors change
• Entry activity can be reviewed when there is a security concern or operational question

This becomes especially useful in offices, apartment buildings, warehouses, multi-tenant properties, and other locations where many people may need different levels of access.

And there’s another important advantage: you don’t necessarily have to replace a physical key every time access needs to change.

If a credential is lost or someone should no longer have access, it can typically be disabled without changing the locks or collecting keys from everyone else.

But just like cameras, access control is only as effective as the way it’s designed and installed. Door hardware, lock type, reader placement, network infrastructure, power, and how the building is actually used all matter.

The goal isn’t simply to open a door electronically. It’s to create a system that makes managing access more secure, organized, and practical day to day.

At HTO Systems, we design, install, service, and integrate access control systems for commercial and multi-tenant properties.

Security for Multi-Tenant Buildings: It’s More Than Just Cameras

Securing a multi-tenant building comes with a different set of challenges than securing a single home or business.

You have residents, employees, visitors, deliveries, contractors, shared entrances, common areas, and people moving in and out of the property every day. The more activity a building has, the more important it becomes to know who has access, where they can go, and what happens when access needs to change.

A well-designed security system can bring several technologies together:

• Access control to manage entry into the building and restricted areas
• Video surveillance to provide visibility at entrances, hallways, parking areas, and other important locations
• Intercom systems to help manage visitor access
• Alarm systems to protect designated areas after hours
• Remote management to make it easier to update access when tenants, employees, or vendors change

But the equipment is only part of the equation.

Camera placement, door hardware, network infrastructure, system integration, and how the property is actually used all play a role in designing a system that works well day to day.

There isn’t one security setup that works for every multi-tenant property. An apartment building, office building, and mixed-use property can all have very different security needs.

At HTO Systems, we design, install, and service integrated security solutions based on the needs of each property.

This is exactly why we like Deep Sentinel

You can talk about AI, cameras, and live monitoring all day — but seeing the system respond to an actual security event tells the story much better.

When Deep Sentinel detects suspicious activity, the event can be sent to a live security guard who evaluates what’s happening in real time. If necessary, the guard can speak directly to the person on the property through two-way audio, activate the siren, and contact law enforcement.

And that human element makes a big difference. Someone isn’t reviewing the footage the next morning — a trained person is actually responding while the situation is happening.

When Was the Last Time You Actually Tested Your Alarm System?

Your keypad is on. The system arms without an error. Everything looks normal.

But here’s something worth knowing: an alarm system that arms successfully hasn’t necessarily had every part of the system tested.

Security systems are made up of multiple components working together — door and window contacts, motion detectors, keypads, communication devices, backup power, and, for monitored systems, a connection to the monitoring station.

Over time, batteries can weaken, sensors can develop issues, equipment can be moved or replaced, and changes to doors, windows, or communication services can affect how the system performs.

That’s why periodic system testing matters.

Depending on the system, testing may include checking:

• Door and window sensors
• Motion detectors and other security devices
• Keypads and system controls
• Backup battery and power status
• Communication between the alarm system and monitoring station

For professionally monitored systems, testing should be coordinated properly and the account may need to be placed in test mode first to prevent unnecessary alarm response or dispatch.

A security system is there for the moments when you need it most. Finding a small issue during a routine check is much better than discovering it during an actual emergency.

Not sure when your system was last tested?

HTO Systems installs, services, troubleshoots, and maintains security systems for residential and commercial properties.

What is Deep Sentinel, and how does it work?

Today, we’re breaking it down in simple terms.

Deep Sentinel is a video surveillance system that does more than simply record what’s happening — it helps respond to potential threats in real time.

With a traditional camera system, footage is typically recorded so you can review what happened afterward. Deep Sentinel takes a more proactive approach. The system uses AI to identify potentially suspicious activity and connects it with live security professionals who can review what’s happening in real time.

If there is a legitimate threat, the operator can speak directly to the person on the property and, when necessary, contact law enforcement.

Simply put, Deep Sentinel combines smart video surveillance with real people who can respond while an incident is happening — not just review the footage afterward.

An employee leaves the company.

You remove their email access, collect company equipment, update passwords, and move on.
A few weeks later, someone asks a simple question:

“Did we ever get their key back?”

And suddenly, no one is quite sure.
Maybe it was returned. Maybe it wasn’t. And even if it was — there’s no way to know whether a copy was ever made.
For a business that still relies on traditional keys, this can become a real security issue.
Changing the locks every time an employee leaves isn’t practical. And simply hoping an old key never gets used isn’t much of a security strategy either.

This is where access control makes a real difference.

When an employee leaves, their card, fob, or credential can simply be deactivated. No changing locks. No collecting keys. No wondering who might still have access.
But access control goes beyond that.
You can decide who can enter, which doors they can access, and when.

Your cleaning company might only need access in the evening. A contractor may need access for three days. An employee may need access to the main office but not the server room or storage area.
And if you ever need to know who entered the building at a certain time, you have an access history instead of having to guess.

That’s the real value of access control.

It’s not about replacing a traditional key with something more high-tech. It’s about having control over who can enter your property — and being able to change that access when circumstances change.

Traditional keys have worked for a very long time, and for some businesses, they still make perfect sense.
But as a company grows — more employees, more doors, contractors, cleaning crews, deliveries — keeping track of physical keys becomes a lot more complicated than it seems.
And sometimes the simplest security question is the one worth asking:

If you had to make a list right now, would you know exactly who can unlock your building? 🔑
