Privacy doesn’t have to mean a wall of hedges.

One of the most requested features in Hamptons landscape design is greater privacy, but privacy can be achieved using any plants in layers.

Evergreens, deciduous trees, flowering shrubs and smaller foreground plantings can be combined to screen neighboring properties, create secluded pool areas and establish more intimate outdoor spaces, all while creating a softer, more natural landscape.

Before pics: Overgrown shrubs blocked sunlight and views of the outdoors.

After pics: Newly installed foundation plantings were designed to be enjoyed from multiple perspectives. The diverse plant palette frames the entryway, highlights architectural details, softens the transition between home and landscape, and creates beautiful views from all perspectives.

How much privacy does your Hamptons home actually need?

The answer depends on when you’re here.

If you primarily occupy your Hamptons home during the warmer months, privacy screening that depends on deciduous shrubs is an excellent option.

Year-round residents and homeowners that visit more often, may choose evergreens for complete screening throughout the year.

Privet, Beech, Hornbeam, and Rose of Sharon are beautiful deciduous hedges that lose their leaves in winter, allowing views through their branches.

Evergreen hedges for year-round privacy include Arborvitae, Viburnum, Cypress, Hollywood Juniper, Boxwood, Skip Laurel, and ‘Gulftide’ Osmanthus.

When a beloved red maple tree died of old age, Mahoney’s team replaced it with a new specimen tree in a prominent place on the
waterfront.

Crews removed the old tree; prepped the hole with soil, compost
and drainage; gently maneuvered new tree across the lawn and into position; backfilled the hole by hand; and installed temporary
staking to help anchor the tree while the roots get established.
