If the internet went out at your house right now — would your security cameras still be recording? 🤔

Did the back of the box mention that the camera still needs a wire?

Most don't. "Wireless" usually means wireless video - but it still needs a power cable running to an outlet. So you've traded one cable (to a recorder) for another cable (to the wall) - and handed your video feed to your WiFi network.

Your camera box says "night vision" — but there are actually three completely different technologies sold under that name, and most spec sheets don't tell you which one you're getting. Here's the 30-second version: IR (infrared) is black-and-white, longest range, cheapest. Starlight pulls color out of ambient light — moonlight, a streetlamp — no spotlight needed. Full-color uses a built-in spotlight for true daytime quality at night, the only one that reliably reads faces and license plates after dark.

Walk into any big-box store and the security camera shelf is almost all WiFi. Walk into a pro installer's truck and it's almost all PoE. Same job. Opposite choices. Here's the actual reason - covering range, the 2.4GHz problem, the wire that doesn't actually go away, the PoE standards (802.3af / at / bt), and the honest test for when WiFi is the right call.
