So happy to announce that our project on South Twin Lake, ME is completed! This was an interesting site – a small rocky island – with some challenging environmental requirements. The new footprint could not be any larger than the old cottage, special coordination was required to get all materials on and off the island, and care was taken to choose sustainable materials that would stand up to the harsh climate.
The new cottage utilizes a wood frame structure, rockwool superinsulation, triple paned uPVC windows, mini-split heating/cooling, custom brise soleils and continuous exterior insulation enabling the owner to comfortably occupy it much earlier and later into the season than a typical spec build. The standing seam metal shed roof was designed for a future south-facing PV array and house battery that will allow the cottage to go off grid. On-demand hot water heaters and composting toilets keep water requirements minimal.
But as sustainable as it is, nothing matches the amazing views of South Twin Lake, Jo-Mary Mountain and Mount Katahdin from its panoramic windows!
