Well folks, we are late on the post since the boys are already on to another job. This job is finished and behind us and the results speak for themselves. You can see in the pictures that the starthistle has been a solid stand on the hilltops in previous years has been hit hard. The goats are a safe, ecological option for starthistle control in wetland environments because we did not have to use herbicides that can affect the ecology of the verbal pools or use costly aquatic registered herbicides and specialized labor to spray just the hills.

The first few days are behind us and the mob has been doing an incredible job targeting the starthistle. You can see in the photos that they have selected the starthistle and other forbs and largely left the grass alone. If we left them in there longer, they would take the grass as well, but that is not our goal here.

Stay tuned folks. We have turned out a grazing mob on the Laguna Terrace Conservation Bank. This is a 250-acre conservation bank in Sloughhouse, CA that preserves vernal pools occurring in depressions created by gold dredging activities. The goats are going to focus on the tailings piles, which are all covered in yellow starthistle. We are using 50 of our kiko bucklings.
