As we begin to face the challenges of repairing our homes from yesterday’s storm, it’s important to remember to do your research and carefully choose who you trust with those repairs.
Local businesses live here, work here, and have a reputation to uphold here. Long after the storm has passed, they’re still part of the community and are much easier to reach if questions or warranty issues come up down the road. Non locals may complete the work and move on, making it much harder to get help if something isn’t right later. And you often end up paying more.
When choosing a company to work on your home, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Look at reviews. Verify licensing and insurance. Pay attention to how a company advertises and conducts business. If a business is willing to ignore regulations (like placing signs in public right-of-way and neighborhood medians)—or doesn’t know them—what other corners might be cut? Are you speaking with the owner or the people overseeing the work, or only a salesperson? Who will actually be responsible for the quality of the job being done on your home?
And if you need a service but don’t know where to start, just ask. One of the best things about local businesses is that we all tend to know each other. Roofers know electricians. Electricians know plumbers. Contractors know fence companies, tree services, painters, and more. I’m always happy to help connect people with trusted local businesses whenever I can. And if I don’t know someone personally, I can usually find someone who does.
This post isn’t meant to criticize anyone. It’s simply a reminder to make informed decisions during a stressful time. Your home is one of your biggest investments, and it deserves careful consideration.
