🚽✨ Making Room for a Smarter Bathroom Upgrade!

Sometimes installing a new fixture means making a few changes behind the scenes first!

Our customer is upgrading their master bathroom with a new smart toilet, but the existing water supply angle stop needed to be relocated to provide the proper clearance for installation.

Our SMJ Plumbing team:

🔧 Carefully opened the sheetrock to access the existing copper water line
📏 Relocated the angle stop approximately 5 inches to accommodate the new smart toilet
💧 Modified the copper piping and thoroughly tested the new connections for leaks
🏠 Reinstalled the sheetrock after the plumbing work was completed
✅ Had the customer double-check and approve the new location before we wrapped everything up

🚽🔧 Commercial Plumbing Is About More Than Fixing the Problem in Front of You!

Our SMJ Plumbing team recently tackled several issues at a commercial property—from restroom flush valves to a clogged kitchen drain and even a water fountain that wasn't cooperating.

🚻 First up: The Restrooms

All of the toilets in both the men's and women's restrooms, along with the urinals, were experiencing problems with their American Standard flush valves.

After inspection, we found severe hard-water deposits and corrosion on the internal flush valve components and pistons. Unfortunately, replacement parts for these particular valves aren't commonly stocked in our area, which can mean longer downtime when repairs are needed.

Our recommendation? Replace the existing valves with Sloan or Zurn flush valves.

Why?
🔹 Replacement parts are readily available locally.
🔹 Internal components are better suited for long-term service.
🔹 Future repairs can often be completed without waiting for special-order parts.
🔹 Less downtime is especially important for busy commercial facilities!

🍽️ Next Up: The Kitchen

The kitchen drains weren't draining properly, so we ran our camera and located a grease blockage at the inlet of the grease trap.

We cleared the blockage and restored proper drainage throughout the kitchen. ✅

The grease trap did not appear to be full at the time of service, but we recommended having it professionally pumped at least once a year—or more frequently depending on usage. Preventative grease trap maintenance can go a long way toward avoiding messy backups and emergency calls.

💦 And Finally... The Water Fountain

The water fountain near the men's restroom wasn't working when we arrived. After troubleshooting, we discovered the GFCI had tripped.

We reset it, restored power, and the fountain began operating normally. We attempted several times to recreate the issue but couldn't get it to malfunction again, and no additional problems were found at the time of service.

Three different problems. Three different solutions. One service call. 👏

💧🔧 One Leaking Icemaker Box Led to an Important Plumbing Upgrade!

Our customer called SMJ Plumbing after noticing their icemaker box was leaking. Once we inspected it, we found the leak was coming from the packing nut on the old gate valve.

We explained the options: we could attempt to tighten the packing nut, but because of the valve's age, there was a chance the leak could return. The customer decided they'd rather take care of it properly and opted for a complete icemaker box replacement. 👍

We removed the old box, installed the new one, restored the home's water supply, and thoroughly tested everything.

✅ New icemaker box installed
✅ Connections tested
✅ No leaks found

But while making the repair, we discovered another issue...

🚨 The home's main water shut-off valve was seized and no longer functioning properly. When we needed to shut the water off for the icemaker repair, we actually had to use the curb stop instead.

That's something you definitely don't want to discover for the first time during a major plumbing emergency!

The homeowner chose to go ahead and address that issue while we were there. We removed the old gate valve and replaced it with a new ball valve, giving them a reliable and much easier way to shut off the water to their home when needed.

We also insulated the exposed water line to help protect it when those unpredictable South Louisiana winter freezes decide to make an appearance. 🥶🌴

Another job completed:
🔧 Icemaker leak repaired
🔧 New icemaker box installed
🔧 Failed main shut-off replaced
🔧 New ball valve installed
🔧 Water line insulated
💧 Everything tested and LEAK-FREE!

🔥🔧 Getting the Kitchen Fired Up! 🔧🔥

There's a lot that goes on behind the scenes when installing new commercial kitchen equipment—and making sure those gas connections are installed properly is a pretty important part of the job!

Our SMJ Plumbing team recently worked alongside the appliance installers to make the gas connections for:

🔥 2 commercial fryers
🔥 1 tabletop stove/range
🔥 1 double oven

As the appliance crew installed and positioned each unit, we followed behind making the necessary gas connections using new gas hoses and quick-connect fittings, along with installing the required equipment restraining lanyards.

Most of the materials were supplied by the appliance company, with SMJ providing a few additional ni***es and a tee needed to complete the installation.

💧 WHEN YOUR LIFT STATION WON’T STOP RUNNING… SOMETHING’S NOT RIGHT! 🔧

A customer called SMJ Plumbing after hearing an unusual noise coming from their lift station. When we arrived, we quickly discovered the pump was running nonstop.

After shutting the pump down and inspecting the basin, we found the water level had dropped below the pump—but the pump never received the signal to shut off. With no more water to discharge, it continued running until it began to overheat, even releasing steam when the lid was opened. 😳

🔎 So what caused it?

The on/off float is mounted on a rod that keeps it at the proper height. The set screw had worked itself loose, allowing the float to slide down out of position. That small issue prevented the pump from shutting off when it should.

Our technician:
🔧 Allowed the pump to cool safely
🔧 Repositioned the float to the proper height
🔧 Tightened and secured the set screw
🔧 Filled the basin multiple times with a garden hose
🔧 Tested several complete pump cycles to make sure everything was operating correctly

After repeated testing, the pump was turning on, pumping down, and shutting off exactly as it should. ✅
