Fall lawn fertilization in Wilmette — the most important application of the year
Most homeowners think spring is the big fertilization season. But for lawns in Wilmette and across the Chicago area, fall is actually more important.
During fall, grass shifts energy from blade growth to root development. The right fertilizer application — timed correctly in late September or October — feeds that root-building process and loads the grass with nutrients it stores through winter. Come spring, that stored fuel powers a faster, healthier green-up than a lawn that went into dormancy unfed.
Look for a fall-specific formula: higher in potassium for cold hardiness and root health, lower in nitrogen than a spring blend, and ideally slow-release so nutrients are delivered gradually. Timing matters too — too early pushes growth the lawn doesn't need, too late and dormancy has already set in.
