How to Protect Your Septic System From Freeze-Ups--

Septic system freeze-ups can cause unwanted issues with your system! Follow these simple steps to avoid a freeze-up this winter:

1. Mulch and snow cover can protect pipes and the tank from freezing by acting as an insulating layer that prevents frost from penetrating deep into the ground. The snow cover should not be compacted. If the snow becomes compacted through foot, vehicle or animal traffic, that can drive down frost and increase the chance of freezing.

2. Mulch can be added to the area covering the septic tank and drainfield if snow cover is inconsistent – especially if grass or other vegetation cover is not available. It is always best to limit any traffic on top of the drainfield.

3. Fix leaks and drain issues! It is important to fix any leaky faucets, toilets or other drainage issues before winter sets in. This will help to avoid costly problems during the winter months.

4. A stock tank heater, which is a floating de-icer used for livestock and garden ponds, can work for helping septic tanks not to freeze. However, the heater has to be in place before any ice forms in the septic tank and is already frozen.

5. Avoid using septic system additives. Putting special additives in the septic tank is unnecessary for the average household as long as the system is functioning as it should.
