Rain was coming so I stayed late and got the joist tape on. Paid off when the deck frame was protected and I didn’t have to wait for wet joists to dry before I could keep moving.

If you’re not using joist tape on your decks, you should be!

A deck doesn’t have to be just a flat spot off the back of the house. You can make it yours! Add a pergola for shade, lighting for the evenings, privacy walls and screens for added protection.

The main thing is figuring out how you want to use the space. Hosting, grilling, hot tub…what are your priorities? Taking these into consideration while designing your deck makes it feel less like an add-on and more like your space.

I’ve been seeing lots of videos about mitered corners and wanted to chip in this little trick. I do this to get rid of extra material that would prevent a tight miter. Takes a bit of extra time but really helps the deck look polished and well-built.

Bringing this one back from a couple summers ago, but it’s the perfect setup for hanging out with friends and family or just taking in some fresh air.

I could sit down and do the math for decking spacing, but I like seeing it all laid out. By laying out deck boards and spacers before I’m even done with framing and taping, I can catch things early, make adjustments, and get every board to line up how I want it.

It also helps me to get as many full board widths as I can. Over the span of a whole deck, a fraction of an inch can make a big difference.

A brand new backyard is taking shape in Mitchell! Just posts and beams for now, but stay tuned for so much more.

This project is basically a full backyard renovation and it’s going to be awesome! Lots of planning, coordinating, and moving parts going into it, but it’ll be ready for a summer of fun. And many more summers to come!
