Ever wonder what goes into building a deck that lasts?

Most people only notice the finished deck boards. What really matters is everything underneath them.

Every joist is crowned, spaced, squared, and securely fastened before we ever install the decking. Taking the extra time now means a stronger, flatter, longer-lasting deck that you can enjoy for years to come.

At Chris Pierce Construction, we believe quality isn’t something you add at the end—it’s built into every step of the process.

If you’re thinking about replacing an old deck or building a new one, we’d be happy to show you the difference that proper framing makes.

Question for you: When you’re investing in a new deck, what’s most important?

Most homeowners will never see this part of a deck… but it’s one of the most important.

That black strip above the ledger board is a drainage mat, and the metal flashing helps direct water away from the house.

Why does it matter?

Water trapped behind a deck ledger is one of the leading causes of hidden rot, mold, and structural damage. By creating a drainage path and properly flashing the connection, any moisture that gets behind the siding has a way to escape instead of soaking into your home’s framing.

It’s one of those details that nobody notices when the deck is finished…

…but it’s the kind of detail that determines whether your deck lasts 10 years or 30.

At Chris Pierce Construction, we believe what’s behind the finished product is just as important as what you can see. Building it right the first time means paying attention to the details that will never be covered in a final walkthrough.

Have questions about your existing deck or wondering if it’s flashed correctly? Drop them in the comments or send us a message.

BEFORE / AFTER 👇
Nearly three years ago, this kitchen went from dated oak and old laminate to a complete transformation:
📍 Cabinets refinished and repainted
📍 New Silestone quartz countertops
📍 Full tile mosaic backsplash
📍 Updated hardware throughout
Same footprint, same cabinet boxes — completely different kitchen. Good bones plus the right finish choices go a long way, and this one's still holding up great almost three years later.
Bonus: this is the same customer who called us back three years later for their deck and patio door — good to see familiar faces.

Thinking about updating your kitchen without a full remodel? Start with the hardware.
New cabinet pulls and k***s are one of the highest-impact, lowest-cost upgrades in the house — but the price range is bigger than people expect:
🔹 Basic installed hardware: $15–20/piece
🔹 Mid-grade finishes: $20–28/piece
🔹 Premium/designer pulls: $28–40+/piece
For a standard kitchen (20–35 pieces), that's typically a few hundred to just over a thousand dollars installed — a weekend project's worth of impact without touching cabinets, counters, or layout.
It's not the whole remodel. But it's often the first domino, and it tells you a lot about what direction you want the rest of the kitchen to go.
Thinking about your kitchen before the holidays? Drop KITCHEN in the comments and I'll walk you through what makes sense for your space.

Not sure if your kitchen needs a full remodel or just some attention? Here's what we look for first.
🔸 Cabinet doors that don't sit flush anymore, or drawers that stick
🔸 Trim and molding pulling away from the wall or ceiling
🔸 Water damage or swelling around the sink base
🔸 Finish that's worn through to bare wood on high-touch areas
🔸 Layout that just doesn't work for how you actually cook and gather anymore
Some of these are simple fixes. Some are signs of something bigger underneath. The trick is knowing which is which before you spend money on the wrong thing.
We'd rather tell you "you don't need a full remodel yet" than talk you into one you don't need. That's the trusted-advisor part of the job, not just the craftsman part.
See any of these in your kitchen? Drop a comment and I'll give you an honest read on it.

Monday roll call: everybody still got all 10 fingers? Around here that's not always a given — pictured is me a few years back, mid-ER-visit, learning that lesson the hard way. Made it through the 4th unscathed this year though. Drop a 🙌 if you did too, or a 🚑 if you've got your own story.

Sunday's for slowing down — even the job site agreed with us this week.
Had a quiet supervisor on the deck build. This fawn posted up in the brush and watched us work for a good while, didn't seem too worried about the saws or hammering. Siouxland job sites come with perks you don't get downtown.
This is the same deck from our patio door project — two-level deck, stairs down to grade, and apparently a wildlife viewing platform on the side.
Hope your Sunday's this peaceful. 🦌

BEFORE / AFTER 👇
One project, three changes:
📍 Old window + awning → full sliding patio door
📍 No deck → two-level deck with stairs down to grade
📍 A dead wall → the best seat in the house
This is the kind of project that doesn't look complicated in a "before" photo — it's a window. But once you open that wall up, you're dealing with structural framing, a new header, ledger board attachment, footings, and code-compliant stair/rail work. That's why we walk every one of these before we price it.
Real transformation, done right, holds up for decades.
Thinking about something similar? Drop DECK in the comments and I'll walk you through what your project would look like.
