Can you tell what this space is going to become before it starts taking shape?

When this was just drywall, it might have been hard to picture what was coming. Now the vision is becoming a custom mudroom drop zone with built-in storage, a stained wood bench, hooks, baskets and plenty of room for all the things that tend to collect by the door.

One of the best parts of building a custom home is watching spaces go from lines on a plan, to framing and drywall, to something that feels intentional and completely at home.

But this is one of our favorite stages of a custom build, when the selections that once lived on samples and inspiration boards start becoming actual spaces.

The tile is in, and this bathroom is beginning to take shape. There’s still plenty to come, but little by little, the vision is becoming a home.

When Greg Gardner started G.J. Gardner Homes in 1983, he laid more than foundations, he built a family business. Four decades on, his sons Trent and Conrad are carrying it forward: Trent as CEO, Conrad as Head of Network Growth.

Where do the shoes, backpacks, purses, keys, jackets, sports gear and dog leashes go when everyone walks through the door?

Hopefully…not the kitchen counter. 😉

A thoughtfully designed drop zone or mudroom gives all those everyday essentials a home, and when you’re building custom, you can design that space around the way your household actually functions.

Think built-in cubbies, hidden shoe storage, charging drawers, a bench, sports-equipment storage or even a dog-washing station. 🐾

But here’s something that’s just as important as what goes into your mudroom: where you put it.

Hidden pantries are one of our favorite kitchen design details because they combine form + function. By integrating the pantry entrance into the cabinetry, you can maintain a clean, seamless kitchen while creating plenty of storage, and even additional prep space behind the scenes.

And when you’re building custom, you can take it even further. Add countertops, a coffee station, small appliances, a second refrigerator or sink and turn your pantry into a full working pantry or scullery.
