Not all 14-50 outlets are created equal.

One of the biggest mistakes we see with plug-in EV chargers is homeowners or inexperienced installers using standard range or stove outlets for electric vehicle charging.

The problem is this:

Most EV chargers pull heavy electrical loads for long periods of time. That is very different from how a traditional stove operates. Many standard 14-50 receptacles were never designed for the constant heat and sustained load created by EV charging.

We have replaced a growing number of melted, overheated, and failed EV outlets because the wrong receptacle was installed originally.

That is why at Fann Electric Services, we only use EV-rated, heavy-duty 14-50 receptacles specifically designed for electric vehicle charging applications when installing plug-in chargers.

Even then, our recommendation is usually the same:

Hardwired EV chargers are the safest and most reliable option.

Hardwired installations eliminate plug connection failure points and typically provide a cleaner, more dependable long-term setup.

But if you prefer a plug-in EV charger, make sure the installation is done properly by licensed and insured electricians with real EV charging experience.
