Pappy's Root Cellar Daylily Farm

Pappy's Root Cellar Daylily Farm We have over 400 varieties of daylilies and perennials. Open by chance or appointment. Call or com

After retiring from the Air Force and working as a Defense Contractor in the Scott AFB area, we decided to settle in the beautiful Shawnee National Forest area of Southern Illinois in Pope County. In the Fall of 2015 we purchased an abandoned cow pasture adjacent to our home and decided to indulge in our dream of creating a daylily farm to support our habit of growing daylilies. After several week

/months of hard labor clearing years of overgrowth and brush we started moving our collection of hybrid daylilies and vintage irises up the hill to their new home. To date, we have over 100 varieties of hybrid daylilies and several varieties of vintage irises and other perennials. The daylilies are taking to their new home and starting to establish themselves. In the meantime we have added several other annuals/perennials to fill in and provide interest while the daylilies expand into their new home. While not yet ready to begin day to day sales operations we wanted to get the word out about our new venture and let our friends, neighbors and future customers know about our new venture.

Well, it has been a while since my last update. I have been very busy, just not in the garden and unfortunately it shows! The weeds have overrun the daylily beds, again. I get very frustrated when I can't keep up, but as Mammy reminds me I am only one person, it's just a hobby, and I am not as young as I used to be. Of course I don't want to hear any of that, because it's true! Good thing I have her to keep me grounded! I did finally get my son moved down here by us. That and the hot weather pretty much did in my plans for the garden. Oh well, as John Pont used to say when he was the IU Football coach"There's always next year"! Until there wasn't! lol In spite of my neglect, there are still quite a few bright spots in the garden. The Rose of Sharon are still going strong and I have so many new colors this year. I like how they hybridize themselves and give so m,any striking results. The Naked Ladies are showing off and the sunflowers, zinnias and other annuals are all going strong. I hope you all are doing well and the heat hasn't been too awful for you. Here are some photos from the garden this morning. Have a great wekend! Pappy

Good Sunday Afternoon from the Root Cellar! Hope everyone is well and staying in out of the heat! Peak bloom season is upon us and I must say it is a little disappointing in some respects. Some of the more vulnerable hybrids are not putting out as much bloom this year. I'm not sure what the problem is. The old fashioned favorites are more than making up for it, though and the zinnias, cosmos and sunflowers have started to bloom as well. There are lots of things I need to do in the garden, but just walking around taking photos just about did me in! I am dehydrated just from walking around! Here are some photos I just took for your enjoyment. Have a great week and stay cool in the high heat! Pappy

Good Morning and happy Father's Day! It is another beautiful sunny day, but a bit warm and humid. I went out this morning to take photos in the garden and was soon dripping with sweat, but that is my nomal state of being! I had help from my trusty Feline Flower Farmers, Patchey and Mimi, as well as from two of the grandchildren, Reese and Camden! Hope everyone is enjoying the day! Pappy

The Anna-Jo Garden Club picked an absolutely beautiful day to come visit the Root Cellar! I think we had around 12 or so folks come out to enjoy the garden and the weather was nearly perfect. After giving a short talk on how I got into the daylily hobby we all wandered around and I answered as many questions as I could. I gave away several Rose of Sharon bushes, I have literally hundreds of them and they are really looking great right now. I also dug a few clumps of various daylilies for the folks to take home with them. My oldest Son, Corey and his oldest daughter, Ann came out and helped with the tour as did one of our feline farmers, Honey Bunch. I really enjoyed the visit, I always love to talk about flowers with like minded people, so today was great. I think all the visitors left with smiles on their faces so I will call it a success! Here are some photos from this morning. Have a great week! Pappy

Good Sunday Morning from the Root Cellar! It has been quite a while since my last post so I thought I would catch up with you. The early daylilies are blooming and I am making a little progress in my neverending war with the weeds. Very little, I am afraid! They come back faster than I can pull them! When I started this hobby 11 years ago I was able to keep up with the maintenance of the beds. Unfortunately, my enthusiasm has exceeded my capabilities! I get frustrated that I am unable to do as much these days as I did when I started, but the wheel of time stops for no one. Severe arthritis in my hands and wrists makes weeding a painful chore, but I muddle through as best I can. Enough of my woes, here are some photos from the garden this past week. I am trying to get the garden ready for the Anna-Jo Garden Club visit next week. We will see how much progress I make. Wishing you all a wonderful Sunday followed by an even better week ahead. Pappy

Good afternoon from the Root Cellar! It is a gray and drizzly day here but still pretty nice. I am not getting as much done as I want to but that is the usual case. We have been getting potted plants ready for the Ag Center's Plant Sale on 2 May and doing a little weeding. I need to do a LOT more weeding, lol! Here are some photos I took last evening. The irises and Peonies are coming along nicely with lots more to come. Hope you have a wonderful weekend! Pappy

It has been a while since my last update. The alte freezes took most of my mid-late daffodils bu we are startingto see some blooms now. The irises, both Bearded and sibedrian are starting to bloom as are the extra early daylilies. Not a lot of color, yet, but itis on the way. We have been invited to participate in the Dixon Spring Agriculture Center Plant Sale on Saturday the 2nd of May, so we will be bringing a bunch of potted plants for sale. Hope to see many of you there. We have also been dealing with an overload of cuteness from Patchey's and Meme's kittens. They are starting to be weaned and getting very playful. Patchey's babies all come running to the sound of my voice, but Meme's are "ho-hum, it's him again"! LOL Any way, we love them all. Can't wait forthe lilies and daylilies to start showing off! Hope you all have a great week and come see us on May 2nd atthe Ag Center. Pappy
