Schools in LAUSD start Monday. Take 60 seconds before drop-off this week.

Walk the route between your front door and the school crosswalk. Look up. Every tree you see overhead is potentially in the path your kid walks under twice a day.

What to check: visible dead limbs, vertical trunk cracks, sudden lean, low-hanging branches over the sidewalk.

It is not about being paranoid. It is about catching things now, before the first windstorm of the season turns a known hazard into an actual problem.

If you spot something on a city tree, report it to 311. If it is on your property or a neighbor's, send us a photo. We will tell you whether it is urgent or whether it can wait.

That noise outside your window? It is probably us.

If you live in Sherman Oaks or Encino and heard a chipper running yesterday, that was our crew finishing up a 3-property cul-de-sac job before lunch.

What people do not see from the street is the planning. Where to park the truck, where to drop the cones, how to swing each limb so it does not hit the neighbor's fence, when to take the heavy cuts versus the small ones. A good tree job looks fast and clean from the outside because the crew has done the math before the chainsaw turns on.

The next time you see a tree crew on your block, that is what is actually happening.

One property. One week ago. Santa Clarita.

The Coast Live Oak in the backyard had been showing signs of decline for two years. The owners assumed it could be saved. By the time we did the inspection, the trunk had a 4-foot vertical crack, the canopy was 40% dead, and three major limbs were directly over the family room roof.

Removal took our crew one full day. Stump ground the next morning. Mulch left behind for the new bed they wanted to plant in October.

The property feels twice as big now. And, more importantly, the roof is no longer a target during wind events.

If you have a tree you have been "watching" for too long, the next inspection should not wait.

"Why did one quote say $800 and another say $2,300 for the same tree?"

We get this question constantly. The honest answer is that not all quotes are quoting the same job.

Some include the haul-out, some do not. Some include the stump, some do not. Some include traffic control or crane rental. Some are licensed and insured. Some are not.

Swipe through to see what should actually be on a tree removal quote. Then ask any company you call to confirm each one in writing.

If we are quoting your project, every one of these is included by default.

Calabasas hillside homeowners: your inspection notice probably came in last week.

If it did not, it is coming. LA County is enforcing defensible space requirements harder this year, and most hillside lots in fire-prone zones get flagged in late August through early September.

We have been clearing hillside slopes from Las Virgenes Road through Old Topanga since June. Same crew, same standards, same equipment. The difference between us and the cheaper guys is the haul-out and the cleanup. We do not leave piles for you to deal with later.

If you have a slope behind your home that has not been touched this season, the work needs to happen now, not in mid-September when crews are at capacity.

Walk down any block in Sherman Oaks and you will see the same 5 trees, over and over.

Mature California Live Oak. Brazilian Pepper. Mexican Fan Palm. Magnolia. Camphor.

Each one has a different problem in August. The oaks drop limbs. The peppers crack. The palms shed fronds in wind events. The magnolias get heat-scorch. The camphors split at the base.

If you live in 91403 or 91423, look up at your front yard tree right now. What species is it? Tell us in the comments and we will reply with what to watch for this month.

Santa Ana winds are about 6 weeks away.

That is the window. Not for panic. For preparation.

Every property in a fire zone should have three things handled before September: brush cleared to LAFD-aligned defensible space, dead canopy limbs removed, and any hazard tree near the structure assessed.

This is not a sales pitch. It is the timeline. The crews who do this work professionally are already booking into mid-September. The ones who say "we will get you in next week" usually cannot.

If you live in a hillside zone in Calabasas or Santa Clarita, check your last service date and reply with the year.

Same tree. Two hours apart.

The first photo is what most mature pines look like across LA parking lots and front yards: dense, heavy, unbalanced, and full of dead interior wood you cannot see from the ground.

The second is that same tree after proper crown thinning.

What we did: selectively removed interior deadwood and crossed branches to let air and light pass through, reduced wind load on the outer canopy, and rebalanced the weight distribution. The tree looks smaller. It is not. It is finally showing the structure that was always there.

This is the work that prevents limbs from coming down in the first Santa Ana of the season.

Got a pine, ficus, or magnolia that has not been properly pruned in the last 3 years? Reply with a photo. Our crew will tell you if it needs the same work.

August in Sherman Oaks is when your trees stop pretending.

The signs we see right now on every street: curled leaves with crispy brown borders, sap weeping from cracks, sudden bare patches in the canopy. These are not aesthetic problems. They are stress signals from a tree under structural pressure.

What homeowners get wrong: they wait for the leaves to fall. By then the tree is already a hazard.

A 15-minute inspection tells you whether it is recoverable or whether it needs to come down before the Santa Ana winds start.

What does your tree look like right now? Reply with a photo and our crew will give you an honest read.
