A little inspiration from Jackson, Wyoming!

Dreen and Sydnee had the opportunity to attend the AIA Wyoming & Western Mountain Region Conference, and what an incredible experience it was. From hearing Dirk Lohan share insights into his grandfather Mies van der Rohe’s legacy and his own architectural practice, to presentations exploring women in architecture, fresh perspectives, the next generation of designers, sustainability, and more, there was no shortage of inspiration. Beautiful studio tours and opportunities to connect with others in the profession made the
experience even more memorable.

As two emerging professionals, Sydnee and Dreen are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to learn from such influential voices, make new connections, and bring fresh
ideas back to our own office.

And of course, we couldn’t leave out the Tetons. Wyoming’s rugged landscapes continually influence the way we approach design, and this trip was a beautiful reminder of just how lucky we are to call this state home.

P.S. We were so immersed in the presentations that our camera rolls ended up featuring more mountains than conference moments. We can’t say we’re too disappointed about that!

A little work/life balance lately!

From family trips to Texas, concerts in Colorado, and college football in North Dakota, to pumpkin patches in Minnesota and right here in Sheridan, our team has been making the most of the season. Closer to home, we’ve been enjoying fall hikes through Crazy Woman Canyon and all the beauty Wyoming has to offer.

When we’re not out exploring, the wildlife comes to us! Apparently, the local turkeys have decided our cars make a pretty great hangout spot.

Here’s to finding a little adventure both near and far, and making time for the things we enjoy outside the office!

Design you can feel.

Color is only part of the story. Texture, pattern, sheen, and material all play a role in how a space looks and feels. Bringing these elements together helps us understand how they interact and create a cohesive palette.

Physical samples are an important part of that process, giving both designers and clients the opportunity to see, touch, and experience materials before they become part of the finished space.

Help us give a warm welcome to QC10’s newest member, Bailey Bennett!

Bailey joins our team after earning his Master of Architecture from Montana State University in Bozeman, with a couple of years at Sheridan College along the way.

Outside of architecture, Bailey enjoys 3D printing, creating everything from modular shelving and storage to lithophanes, and keeping up with a weekly game night. He also takes Secret Santa very seriously, designing elaborate gift boxes that are intentionally difficult to open. His current record? 27 minutes.

We’re happy to have Bailey on the QC10 team and look forward to seeing what he creates here!

The principal purpose of architecture is to provide shelter. It is to protect us from the elements and the world outside.

One of the often-overlooked things we do as architects is design for safety. In fact, architects are licensed to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public. It isn’t simply about designing beautiful buildings, although if our buildings look good while doing their job, so much the better.

The recent flooding in Nepal is a sobering example of how even well-designed and well-built structures can fail when overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of a natural disaster. But amid the devastation, there are also examples of what thoughtful design and construction can do. One such example is the “Turquoise House.”

This house stood in place and protected its inhabitants while neighboring homes disappeared by the onslaught of the flood waters. Video shows residents stranded on the balcony as floodwaters rage past, and images of the aftermath show the house still standing while buildings beside it were reduced to foundations.

There were likely several factors at work, its construction, foundation and location among them, and no building can be expected to withstand every possible force of nature. But in this case, the house survived, and so did the people who called it home.

When we design buildings, we can’t anticipate every catastrophic event. We can, however, design for the risks we know: those addressed by building codes, those inherent to a particular site, and those that may arise throughout a building’s life. We try to look ahead and consider what the future might bring, both from within the building and from forces outside our control.

That’s good design.

We hope none of our buildings ever have to withstand a disaster of this magnitude, but if they do, we hope they perform as remarkably as the ‘miracle house.’

The Big Red Ranch House has been such a notable project for our team, and we’re excited to finally share a few peeks at the finished space. It was a pleasure working alongside In-Yarak Construction Inc. to bring this project to life.

The final product came together even better than we could have imagined, staying true to the historic character of the property while creating a refreshed space that feels right at home at Ucross.

Architecture often starts with a sketch—but not every sketch is a building waiting to be built.

Sometimes it’s the beginning of an idea, a way to explore form and space, or simply a creative outlet that sparks inspiration for something down the road.

Architecture is technical, but there’s always an art to it.

Interior design goes hand-in-hand with architectural design. It’s a continuous process of thinking about the language of a building and how a space will look, feel, and function for the people who use it.

That process begins early—considering finishes like wood treatments, carpet, casework, and paint colors—and continues through selecting the furniture and fixtures that occupy a space just before people do.

The Wyoming Girls’ School has been an especially intentional project because of the environment it is designed to support. With a mission centered around providing therapeutic and educational services in a safe, nurturing, and trauma-responsive setting, we incorporated trauma-informed design principles throughout the interiors. Calming and subdued colors, natural materials, biophilic patterns, and thoughtfully selected finishes help create an environment that feels safe and secure while also warm and welcoming.

We’ve already had the opportunity to see some of these interior elements take shape, and we’re excited for the final layer—furniture—to arrive at the end of this year and bring the full vision together.
