🏡 **WHY DO I ASK FOR YOUR PROJECT BUDGET BEFORE PROVIDING AN ESTIMATE?**
Let me explain why House Mouse Services LLC does things a little differently than your average contractor.
Imagine this scenario…
You have a home improvement project that needs to get done. Maybe it's a roof, a bathroom remodel, accessibility modifications, or repairs you've been putting off for years.
You take time off work, rearrange your schedule, and invite three different contractors into your home to provide estimates.
You explain what you want, they take measurements, and eventually the estimates start rolling in.
**And then comes the sticker shock.** 💰
You have $10,000 saved for a project, but the estimates are coming back at $18,000, $22,000, and $25,000.
Now what?
Maybe you're a senior living on a fixed income. Maybe you're working with a settlement, an insurance payout, retirement funds, or savings your family has spent years putting together.
**You can't just magically come up with another $10,000.**
So you're left feeling defeated, overwhelmed, and wondering how you're ever going to get this project completed.
**THIS IS WHERE MY COMPANY OPERATES DIFFERENTLY.**
I work with a network of approximately 20 contractors and business owners across multiple trades.
I understand labor rates, material costs, overhead, profit margins, scheduling, and the many factors that go into pricing construction projects.
More importantly, I can communicate directly with these contractors and explain the entire picture:
🔨 The scope of work
💰 The available budget
📅 The timeline
🏠 The homeowner's needs and circumstances
🛠️ Alternative materials, methods, and project options
**And here's something else homeowners don't always consider: Not every contractor has the same pricing or scheduling needs.**
You might have called a well-established contractor whose schedule is booked out for months. They're extremely busy, have substantial overhead, and are charging premium rates because their demand allows them to.
There's nothing wrong with that! They've built a successful business and deserve to be compensated for their work.
**But what if I know another qualified contractor who's in a completely different position?**
Maybe they're just starting their business and building their customer base.
Maybe they're between large projects.
Maybe they're waiting on permits for another job and have a two-week opening in their schedule.
Maybe they had a cancellation and would rather keep their crew working than have everyone sitting at home.
**That contractor might be willing to negotiate a better price simply because your project fits perfectly into their schedule!**
That doesn't mean they're less qualified or that the quality of work is any different. It means their business circumstances are different.
And because I communicate regularly with contractors and business owners, I may know about those opportunities before the average homeowner ever would.
**Sometimes the difference between an unaffordable project and a realistic one isn't the project itself. It's finding the right contractor at the right time.**
When you call a traditional contractor and ask for an estimate, they're generally pricing exactly what you've asked them to build.
And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that! That's their job.
**But my job is a little different.**
When you tell me your budget ahead of time, I can start looking for **solutions instead of simply handing you a price.**
Maybe we can use a different material that accomplishes the same goal.
Maybe we can modify the design without sacrificing safety or functionality.
Maybe we can break the project into phases and tackle the most important repairs first.
Maybe there's a more cost-effective construction method you didn't even know existed.
Or maybe I can connect you with a qualified contractor in my network whose availability, overhead, and business circumstances make them a better fit for your budget.
**I'm not asking what you can afford so I can charge you every penny of it. I'm asking so I can figure out what we can realistically accomplish with it.**
And sometimes, I have to be the person who tells you that the budget simply isn't enough to complete the project safely or correctly. I would rather have that conversation upfront than waste your time, my time, and three other contractors' time.
I don't expect contractors to sacrifice their profits, cut corners, or work for free. They have employees, insurance, equipment, licensing, and families to support, too.
I also believe that newer businesses deserve opportunities to grow, just as homeowners deserve access to qualified professionals who respect their financial limitations. I still expect appropriate licensing, insurance, qualifications, and quality workmanship.
**My goal is to find that middle ground where the homeowner's needs, the available budget, and the contractor's ability to operate a profitable business can all come together.**
That's what construction coordination and advocacy mean to me.
Not just telling you what something costs, but helping you understand your options and finding a realistic path forward.
❤️ **Because sometimes people don't need another estimate telling them what they can't afford. They need someone willing to help them figure out what they CAN do.**
