Quick paint tip: Glossy surfaces need a little prep.

Painting over a glossy or slick finish without preparing it first can make it harder for the new paint to properly bond.

Cleaning the surface and lightly scuff-sanding the existing finish helps give the new coating something to grab onto, reducing the risk of peeling or poor adhesion.

A smooth finish starts with what happens before the paint goes on.

Color of the Week: Sherwin-Williams Black Fox SW 7020

Deep, warm and versatile, Black Fox can add just the right amount of contrast without the harshness of a true black.

Paired here with Aqua-Sphere SW 7613 and Greek Villa SW 7551, it creates a bedroom that feels simple, functional, comfortable and pulled together. A little color, a little contrast and plenty of personality.

Sometimes, three colors are all it takes to completely change how a room feels.

Choosing paint? Check your light bulbs, too.

The numbers on your bulbs can make a big difference in how paint colors look in your home.

Kelvin (K) measures the color temperature of light:

• 2700K–3000K: Warm, soft light with a cozy feel
• 3500K–4000K: More neutral, balanced light
• 5000K: Cooler, brighter light that feels closer to daylight

Then there’s CRI, or Color Rendering Index. CRI measures how accurately a light source shows colors compared with natural light, on a scale of 0–100.

• 80+ CRI: Fine for general household lighting
• 90+ CRI: Better for seeing paint colors, décor and finishes accurately
• 95+ CRI: Excellent color accuracy when seeing true color really matters

An easy way to remember it:

Kelvin tells you whether the light looks warm or cool. CRI tells you how accurately that light shows color.

Before choosing a paint color, check your samples under the lighting you actually use in the room. The same paint can look surprisingly different when the light changes.

FUN FACT: Even Mount Rushmore needs its cracks sealed.

Those 60-foot-tall granite faces are exposed to rain, snow, ice and some pretty serious temperature swings.

To help protect the monument, preservation crews seal cracks in the granite to keep water from getting inside, where freezing and thawing could cause further damage. Modern repairs have included flexible silicone-based sealants.

Basically, even Mount Rushmore needs a little caulk maintenance.

Your house may be slightly smaller, but the principle is the same: keeping water out can prevent much bigger repairs later.

You don’t always need a whole-room makeover to make a space feel different.

Fresh trim, a new wall color or an updated door can completely change how a room feels — without changing anything else.

Sometimes the simplest updates make the biggest difference.
