Do you live on a septic system? Give us a follow to better understand and take care of your system so it outlasts its life span!

Have you ever wondered where the wastewater goes every time you flush, shower, do laundry or wash dishes?

All that wastewater is (typically) headed to the same spot! Your septic tank.

That’s where it begins to separate!

💩 Heavy solids sink to the bottom of the tank, forming a base layer called sludge

💧 The liquids stay in the middle and will eventually flow out to the lateral field

🧻 Lighter materials like fats, oils, and grease float to the top, forming the scum layer

But here’s the thing you need to know! Those solids sinking to the bottom don’t just disappear. Yes, some of the organic matter will naturally break down over time but sludge continues to accumulate over time.

As homeowners you have two options:
1️⃣ get your tank pumped out regularly over time to remove the sludge layer
2️⃣ let the sludge layer build up so much it starts to flow into your lateral field causing much larger problems 🚩🚩🚩

That’s the real reason pumping septic tanks is needed. Not because your tank is full over water but because solids need to be removed before building up too much!

This is a common misconception we hear a lot from homeowners thinking that a “full tank” means it needs pumped out.

But actually septic tanks are designed to stay full in order to work properly! The deciding factor of when to pump is based on how much build up and sludge there is, not the water level.

Do you know if your home is on a septic system or city sewer?

Many of our clients actually don’t know the answer to that question and it’s important to know so you can care for and maintain your system properly if you are on septic.

4 WAYS TO FIND OUT:

1️⃣ Check your water bill. If your on city sewer, this is where it should show up

2️⃣ Check your yard for septic lids (risers). Although some septic systems don’t have risers, many do and it’s a good indicator you are on septic.

3️⃣ Give your water company a call. They should be able to look at records and find out if you are on sewer.

4️⃣ If these don’t work or you have more questions, reach out to your local septic company. They should be able to answer questions and help you get to the bottom of any problems!

An ATU (Aerobic Treatment Unit) is essentially a mini wastewater treatment plant in your own backyard.

Unlike a conventional septic system, an ATU uses oxygen and beneficial bacteria to clean wastewater to a much higher level before it’s dispersed.

Because the water is treated more thoroughly, it can often be used for irrigation or discharged into approved waterways, depending on local regulations and system design.

They’re a great option for properties where a conventional septic system isn’t the best fit.

When the ground gets oversaturated, septic systems tend to act up. Especially if there are already underlying issues. 🌧️👀

Heavy rain is actually a great time to check the overall health of your septic system.

HERE ARE A FEW THINGS TO LOOK FOR:

🌧️ Standing water over your septic tank or lateral lines

🌧️ Slow drains or gurgling toilets inside the home

🌧️ Sewage odors outside

🌧️ BONUS TIP: If you have a pump system, make sure the electric and alarms are working properly!

A healthy septic system should continue moving wastewater underground, even during heavy rain. So if you’re noticing warning signs, don’t wait, because next thing can be a stinky backup inside the house 🤢💩

We all love killing those bathroom germs and what better way to do that than use strong household cleaners like bleach? Aka: clorox 😏

…but that’s exactly the problem when it comes to your septic system.
Your septic system relies on good bacteria to break down waste. When bleach or other strong cleaners are regularly going down your drains, it can kill off that good bacteria in your tank and slow everything down.

That slow down can lead to:
• Buildup in your tank
• Poor breakdown of waste
• Increased risk of backups or failure

With mowing season upon us, this is when we get the most calls from homeowners finding wet spots in their yard 🏡

If that soggy area is near your septic system, it probably means one of these things:

• There’s a blockage in the system

• Your drain field isn’t working properly

• Your system is failing

A healthy septic system should keep everything underground. So if you notice wet spots next time you’re out in your yard, I highly recommend getting it checked before it turns into a bigger (and more expensive) problem.
