Here's a refresher. The frequency with which you should change your air filters depends on the type of air filter you are using, the overall air quality of your home, the type(s) of pets you have (dogs, cats, birds, etc.), and the number of people in the home.

Most manufacturers recommend changing basic filter every 30 to 60 days. The following will help you determine the right schedule for you.

* For an average home without pets, the filter should be changed every 90 days.
* If your home has a single pet, the filter should be changed every 60 days.
* If you have multiple pets or someone in your home with allergies, the filter should be changed every 30 to 45 days.

A unit needs at least 2 to 3 feet of clearance around it and 5 feet of clearance above it.
